For my speaking classes, I've finished the textbook and they're pretty dodgy as to when I'll be getting a new one. I don't really care to get a new one as the books suck. I could write better, more interesting reading/comprehension lessons. Anyway, I'm trying to create ones on topics that the kids might be interested in, and I might be interested in writing/researching. (I took a poll about future topics: Brit pop and wrestling Hmmm maybe I'll do a history of great wrestlers which means I might have to, for the first time in my life, use the word "superfly" in something I've written.)
Anyway, the first one I did for my middle schoolers is a history of Donkey Kong. It follows the textbook's style: The kids take turns reading paragraphs from a passage. There are then comprehension questions, to see if the kids understood the material. Then there's some discussion questions to get the kids to flap their gums.
Most of the kids are familiar with Mario... Super Mario Brothers etc. Although you might have to watch your pronunciation on Mario. They're used to hearing it in their wacky inflectionless "everything is a distinct syllable" Korean pronunciation. So not "Mare reeee oh" but "MAH RI OH" So this is an interesting look at the origin of their hero:

I've also made a few tweaks to my Yu Gi Oh like card game, which you can view/dl at the same page. Feel free to use the Donkey Kong bit but note the various restrictions, etc. Thanks for any comments/corrections/tweaks. |

Ironically, "Mah Ri Oh" is closer to correct that "Mare reeee oh"
The correct answer is "marr-ee-oh". |

Yeah that would be a traditional eastern canadian/midwestern way. I tend to roll my r a bit, however. |
