Hey all,

So I'm starting to think ahead to the end of my time here in Korea (August) and I want to start shipping stuff to my folk's home in Canada, and I have a couple of questions;

1). Roughly how much does it cost to ship back about 20kgs of stuff (clothing, DVD's, books, ect)? I'll be using surface mail, so I know that cuts down the cost a bit.

2). Has anyone run into any problems with shipping back burned DVD's (the Yongsan variety)? Would it be better to throw them into a DVD carrying case and just chuck the clamshell cases totally?

3). This one might seem silly, but I'll ask it anyway. I want to ensure that my folks don't have to pay terrifs when the package comes in. I know that if I check "gift" on the waybill, they won't have to pay to accept the package. Is this the only way to ensure they won't have to pay? Is there something else I could check instead of "gift"? I just don't want to run the risk of someone opening up the box and seeing that the stuff inside isn't really a gift and then someone getting nailed for it.

Thanks for any and all help.

You could say sender`s personal, used belongings but it always comes down to the discretion of the customs person. Gift matters not if they feel like opening it up and charging you book values.

To answer in order:
1.) 48k per 20 kilo box (a postal 5 is the biggest they allow going to Canada.

2.)no.

3.) You have a $10k + your $750 duty free when you return AFTER being away for a full year. Send it addressed to yourself c/o your parents. Itemize the contents for your declaration when YOU return as goods to follow. It will take 3-6 months for them to get to Canada after you ship them so you should be home to claim them and their won't be any taxes due.

The alternative is to label the contents on the shipping label in a less exact way (ie: used clothes, cd's books) - value <$60 and gift.

Should be no problems.
