in passenger complaints filed with the DOT.
#1 United Airlines
2.01 complaints per 100,000 passengers
United didnt fare well last year eithercoming in at No. 2but this year it grabs the title of worst airline for passenger complaints.

I haven't flown on a single US based airline flight that I thought was actually decent since about 1999. US based airlines truly suck. This info doesn't surprise me in the least. |

I've flown probably 100 times in my life and the most recent trip I took from Osaka to San Francisco on United was the most horrible & dehumanizing experience of my life. The $300 I saved flying United wasn't worth it, I'll never fly international with them again. |

The flight was 10+ hours, full flight, no empty seats, and they only had one bilingual flight attendant, who was working in first class. There were a number of Japanese travellers who needed help with their immigration forms, and the flight attendants repeatedly told them that they had to 'figure it out themselves'.
We got our first meal 30 minutes after departure and our 'snack' (white bread with ham and cheese) 30 minutes before landing, which meant that we were on the flight for 9 hours with no food or drink service.
We had turbulence for almost an hour right in the middle (not blaming anyone for that) and during it, the flight attendants stood around in their areas and literally YELLED down the aisle whenever someone tried to get up while the seatbelt sign was on. The flight attendants were incredibly rude to everyone, including calling out a teenager sitting near me while we were getting ready for our descent because he'd forgotten to take out his headphones. The worst of the FAs came over to him and in an incredibly condescending way, said "We don't just make up these things for fun you know, it wouldn't kill you to respect the rules." The two of them had never even interacted before that.
I'm aware that FAs have a difficult & tiring job and I don't usually criticize, but these women were unjustifiably rude to everyone.
It was just a terrible experience in general - I can't even imagine what it must have been like for anyone who was sick or pregnant and had to put up with that service or that long between meals. |

Really huh? I've only had good experiences with Virgin America, Southwest, Frontier, Airtran, and Jet Blue. It is the legacy carriers (American, United, Delta) that I can't stand... |

United is horrible...no debate there.
For the North Am - Asia route:
AA is ok, we used them a few times.
Delta is a toss up.
Northwest (before it merged with Delta) was ok.
Did not use other US carrier for that trans-pacific route. |

I don't think I have flown Southwest since about 1999. I've never flown the other small ones you mentioned. The legacy carriers are truly awful..and those are the ones you fly internationally (unless you take an airline from another country, which I generally try to do). |

I flew United Business to Tokyo last weekend and was delighted with the service. I flew back in coach and hated every minute of it. |

Tired fliers often think about how nice it would be to stretch out across a whole row of economy-class seats and take a nap. But let's face it: airline seats were simply not designed for napping. That is, until Air New Zealand introduced its "Sky Couch," with flip-up seats created for just that purpose.
Comforts like these are just one reason ANZ was voted the No. 4 World's Best Airline in our annual World's Best Awards, where our readers ranked 76 airlines based on cabin comfort, in-flight service, customer service, value, and food.
So which airlines came out on top? International airlines virtually own the top 20 World's Best Airlines; only two U.S. carriers made the list. Asian and Middle Eastern carriers dominate the top 10, with scores that are remarkably consistent from year to year, such as this year's No. 3-ranked Etihad Airways, a United Arab Emirates-based carrier.
One thing is clear: the quest by the top-ranked airlines to become even better is raising the stakes. The leading carriers are vying to upgrade seating in every class - so-called "thin seats" in economy that allow everyone to recline without disturbing neighbors are all the rage among Asian carriers. For example, Korean Air, which ranks No. 9, earned points for its ergo-friendly "slim seats."
But ultimately, it's service that makes or breaks an airline's ranking. Great on-the-ground customer service is vital to a high ranking. But even more important - and more highly weighted - is in-flight service. After all, you probably won't remember a cramped coach seat, but you'll definitely remember (and possibly complain about) a rude flight attendant.
So check out the World's Best Airlines:
No. 1 Singapore Airlines
No. 2 Emirates
No. 3 Etihad Airways
No. 4 Air New Zealand
No. 5 Virgin America
No. 6 Virgin Atlantic Airways
No. 7 Cathay Pacific Airways
No. 8 All Nippon Airways
No. 9 Korean Air
No. 10 Thai International Airways

I always fly business and they treat me very well. Last time I went to Korea and flew United business, I got two bottles of champange to take home with me. I won't fly coach on any airline if I can help it. |

Wow this must be old. I've been keeping up with the ratings for the past 4 years or so and never seen the rankings listed like this. FYI, the 2011 rankings are as follows:
1. Qatar Airways
2. Singapore Airlines
3. Asiana Airlines
4. Cathay Pacific Airways
5. Thai Airways International
6. Etihad Airways
7. Air New Zealand
8. Qantas Airways
9. Turkish Airlines
10. Emirates
