I don't even know what I've seen for 2009, trying to catch up I guess. I saw "World's Greatest Dad" the other day, and it was good, pretty funny. There were a few others on some list that might be worth a see. I liked "The Blind Side". Thought "Invictus" was nothing special.
Why bother with this thread? I dunno. Opinions? Maybe it's just as well to post here as elsewhere. |

I saw Precious about the obese black chick with an abusive family, that was pretty good. Mariah Carey was actually good in it, and totally unrecognizable. I usually don't like people with apostrophes in their names but Mo'Nique was really great in it too.
Paranormal Activity wasn't bad either.
The White Ribbon was really good too, very long though. Interesting German film.
The Orphan really sucked in my humble opinion. I love Mrs. Jolie/Pitt but Wanted really sucked too. |

I loved District 9, Inglorious and Avatar.
Where did you see Precious? Did you just download it?
I saw a trailer for that and it looked really good. Surprising to see Mariah striped of all her make up and glamour. |

I downloaded Precious from vuze.com They have torrent files. I knew Mariah was in the movie but I had no idea it was her until later on in the movie when I kept waiting for her to show up and finally realized it was her. |

It amazes me that anyone would see Inglouious Basterds as one of 2009's best films. Like Tarantino's other movies, IG is a high budget B movie. His films contain cheap jokes and he shamelessly rips off ideas from other filmmakers. Brad Pit is pretty lame in this film. One dimensional character whose best scene in the movie is when he proclaims his unit's goal - killing nazis. After that line, he was pretty unfunny / uninteresting.
If you want to see a director that rips off other genres and makes a movie that is 10X more artistic, watch Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django. By chance, Tarantino also worships this director and makes a cameo in this film.
For 2009. I liked
Bad Lieutenant (Nicolas Cage)
The Hurt Locker |

I'm no Quentin fan, but I loved IG and didn't care much at all for Sukiyaki. I guess I missed the 10x more artistic part. I did catch the boring and nonsensical aspects of it, though. |

Let's compare the trailers. Which one has more artistry?

Aw shoot, I fell asleep halfway through the second trailer
Sorry, but I didn't see any significant artistic value in the movie nor did I find it very entertaining--and I still don't. I thought it was closer to what Miike thought would look cool. I'd agree that it was somewhat stylish. To be honest, it took me 6 sessions to actually sit through the movie and finish it; and even then, I fast-forwarded through parts of it. And I'm not an impatient guy either, I watch Kim Ki Duk movies!
Anyone else see this film or what?
I'd rather watch IG another few times than grind through Sukiyaki again.
EDIT: and I wasn't even saying IG was any more artistic than Sukiyaki. My claims were simply that IG was a better overall film and that I didn't see any of the artistry you do in Sukiyaki. |

2009 was a bit of a dud year in movies, for me. It was probably the year of the decade for music but for movies..... not so much. 2007 was probably the best year for movies, this decade.
I'm struggling to think of something to mention. Hurt Locker was fine, but wouldn't be top 50 on a movies of the decade list, and many people pick it for movie of '09.
"Up" is another good entry in the Pixar canon.
I haven't seen it yet, but "Fantastic Mr Fox" will be good. It's Wes Anderson/Roald Dahl. One of my favorite directors and one of my favorite writers. I'm kind of saving it till a decent dvd rip comes on the torrent sites.
2009 was not a good year for movies. |
