Why can't Koreans fix American cars?

Let me rephrase that. I wouldn't feel comfortable having a mechanic who is not trained properly work on my car. This isn't a case of "seen one engine you've seen them all".

I'm not sure of the exact percentage but I would guestimate that 70% of cars on Korean roads are Korean. If there was a GM dealership in Seoul that would be great. Not sure however.

There is also the problem of parts. I would say that 70% estimate is way to low. It would be closer to 90% if not greater

They have Chrysler dealerships in Seoul. GM ones too. Just parts would have to be imported.

Not necessarily- GM bought out Daewoo a few years ago, and lots of GM cars, especially smaller ones are manufactured in Bupyeong.

For GM that might be true but not his Chrysler.

So if i buy a Hyundai Sonata in the US (that might have been assembled in the US) would I still have to pay the import tax, or will I be safe?

If the answer is "yes", if I find a Sonata in the US that was assembled in S. Korea, I image I'm exempted from the tax?

Cheers.

From what I understand, it's much cheaper to buy, say, a used Sonata (couple of years old) in the US even with the $1000 or so shipping cost....

I wouldn't do it. You're opening up a box of headaches, and getting screwed. Especially if you don't know the system here.

Could you possibly expand on some of the potential run-ins? Seems pretty straightforward (or so I thought)....

Shipping (shipping costs will be more than $1000), import taxes/VAT (not to be confused with "duty", excise taxes or tariffs), certification for use in Korea, mandatory mechanical and safety check, etc.

Just buy a beater here. (I picked up an old mini van for 600k won) and it only cost me about 150k (plus insurance) to get it checked and registered.

You should also find out if any companies here will insure your car and what it would cost to register it and get plates.

Well I did it. At the time of visa change (from D8 to E7) she came in as "personal effects" and - happily - emission test exempt.

Insurance OK, if expensive at around 1.5 m KRW.

Downside is that I cannot sell her here but have to take her out eventually.

Good work!

Regarding later?

DUMP it in the (Han)river after 30 years! No one will notice. Anyone comes asking? Just raise your arms in an "idunno" position, and say, "hanguksaramdoduknom." Should suffice.
