Hey, this is weird:

I just got back to Korea and now with my internet cable plugged in I hear AFN radio coming through my speakers. It doesn't come through my laptop speakers, just the external speakers. It is heard best when the speakers are only partially plugged in but when the speaker is fully plugged in I hear it faintly. This happens even when the laptop is turned off!

Does anyone know why this happens and how I can get it to stop. I live near Yongsan base but never heard it before today.

Seriously? That's pretty bizarre. Never heard of anything like that happening. Maybe they're testing some sort of propaganda technology to highjack the PA system up north .

My guess:
1. Strong signal
+
2. Current (your speakers have a separate power source.)
+
3. receiver of some kind. (separate sound system altogether, right?)
=
echo.

It might not be JUST the internet cable. This is often caused by the power source and the cables becoming an antena. It's quite common in cheap external speakers because they have lower quality amplifiers that aren't filtered so well.

And the AFN signal you're receiving is probably either nearby, has a strong signal, or has a low bandwidth signal (which could travel along your net connection).

You could try separating the power lines and audio wires. If you have a lot of wires, make sure they aren't tangled.

I worked in an office once where we could listen to the taxis that were within maybe 50m if the PC speakers were turned on.

Similar to daemyann, maybe your speakers have radio ability.

Dude! Same thing has been happening to me as well, except the radio comes out of a power outlet. There's some cord going into the outlet, and I cut it and ripped it out, and I still get a signal.

It's getting annoying. I don't hear it very well, and it comes and goes, but sometimes you just want complete quiet, you know?

I'm not even sure it's a power outlet... not at home and can't remember right now... it kind of just seems to be a hole in the wall where an outlet should be, but it's not there anymore...

The speaker coil can pick up radio waves....you can easily build a radio out of a length of wire and a coffee can (along with a few diodes and such), and it doesn't require any more power than is already carried by the radio waves themselves....it's quite common. You are close to a radio transmitter and are picking up the signal. The speakers have a low tech amp in the circuits. Higher priced units have inductors to dampen out the signal. If you could ground the laptop or the speaker the problem would go away.

Why is everybody so geeked about AFN? You don't need it at all if you have the Internet. Yes, it was good a few years ago when they had the sports on it, but once they lost that and Saturday Night Live, it was garbage. Thousands of radio stations out there, folks.
