Just came accross this Korean ad. Is it pushing it by Korean standards or quite tame?

in a word yes!

I knew a black chap, and he was speaking to this Korean woman in broken English she said, 'your skin is like chocolate'. I was new to Korea then and I just looked horrified... if I heard it now, I would just think it's the ignorance of Korean culture.. It's racist but I dont think it's particularly "hate" racism.

Saying this is racist is basically validizing the stereotype that African-Americans like fried chicken.

I am caucasian and also like fried chicken. It's no biggie.

Yeah its racist. It's like one of those dumb ads you see on TV back home where they do the Asian jingle followed by the gong and then some guy speaking in some stupid FOB accent.

But its stupid racist, not mean racist, just like the Asian ads.

Well, I was going to say that it is truly racist only if the commercial makers know the historical context of how Southern white supremacists stereotyped and lampooned African-Americans supposed predilection for fried chicken. I am not sure the Koreans know this history or not.

But I'm not sure how calling it racism validates the stereotype. It does not matter that most people like fried chicken(or did until we found out how bad fried food is for you). Blacks were the ones ridiculed for it. Racism is seldom, if ever, rational anyway.

Now, would it be too much to suggest that the commercial also crosses the line by portraying these 3rd world natives as savage cannibals? Or am I getting a little too PC?

Kind of a play off the ol' how do you stop 5 black guys from raping a white girl joke. It's pretty racist.

But Koreans really like fried chicken too...

Anyone notice that the Korean guy sort of did a Jesus turning-water-into-wine thing there? Maybe this has religious connotations too. A missionary bringing Korean culture to tribal headhunters. In the form of Kyochon chicken.

If all the actors got paid (in chicken), then we ought to be thankful for this gem of marketing.

I gasped, I laughed, and I threw my fist in the air like Judd Nelson when our captor used his magic fried chicken summoning ability to escape death; even though he was probably at fault anyway for snooping around the native's island with a hairstyle stolen from Keith Flint.

In the end, everyone is happy, and we should all be yelling "CHIKAA!" along with them.

I thought so until I discovered 굽네 (Kumnae) chicken. Instead of frying it, they roast it and serve it with dipping sauces. Get on it.

These guys aren't African Americans, they are Africans. It's debatable that it's racist. It's tacky, I'll give you that. Korea doesn't have any PC generally in this country. Only a few years ago did we see commercials by the government exhorting people to treat mixed children as Koreans. It doesn't mean that everyone will go around commenting that someone's skin is so chocolate looking. A high class Korean probably wouldn't do that. Again, this country only a few decades came from an agrarian life and mentality to being wealthy.

Showing African tribesmen about to kill you does feed into stereotypes of savages in Africa, so, in that sense, it is problematic. It's ignorant, I will give that, but I didn't automatically think racism.

On a side note, take a look at this funny video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyPtSlYHtAw&feature=related

A Japanese pitcher accidentally hits this tall black player, and he thinks the guy is angry and coming at him.
