Radical conservationists launched a helicopter Thursday to search for a key Japanese whaling ship and renew hostilities a day after one of their boats was wrecked in a collision that each side blamed on the other. |

It's that time of year again where we hear these kinds of stories.
While I've never been fond of Sea Shepards tactics, I'm also skeptical of Japan's claims that it's for 'scientific research.'
What does everyone else think? |

Its getting a bit extreme out there, but it still serves to keep refreshing the worlds attention on the despicable whaling practises.
I doubt japan will back down due to the whole Confucian loss of face thing- which i doubt the staff of sea shepherd understand at all. Its a point of japanese national pride to not surrender.
I suspect that long term, a campaign of education in Japan would bear more fruit. By the time it did however, the whales would be extinct.
In the meantime Sea Shepherd are performing a valuable task by preventing a lot of whales getting killed. |

I don't think anyone actually believes that its for science. The fact that the dead ones all seem to end up in the fish market, would probably give lie to the japanese issue.
I think Oz doesn't want to get into a major dispute over whales, though the japanese could actually just hunt for them in the northern hemisphere where they live.
I think most southern hemisphere people whould be quite happy if Northern Hemisphere people kept their extreme ideas in thier hemisphere.

Hmmm. Why is Oz capitalized but 'japanese' isn't? Twice? |

Are the whales they hunt endangered? If not, this group is a bunch of braindead hippies much like the rest of the environmentalist movement. |

there is a law in the world where countries can do what ever they want on their land, or in international waters...
if the japanese government decided tomorrow that it wants to execute disabled people becuase they feel they are aburden to society, other countries in the world would just sit back and say.. WOW.. maybe send some letters and plead for them to not do.. if they decided to torture and murder prisoners again, the world would just sit back and say.. DAMN
please stop....
if the Japanese [Mod Edit] want to slaughter dolpins, cut off fins from sharks, and slaughter whales.. again the countries just sit back and say.."ohh don't do that"..
now of course once the japanese enter national waters then they will have a frigget up their arse telling them to [Mod Edit]!!
welcome to the world.... |

I view it as both their fault that the boat got hit... Japanese video taken up high clearly shows Ady Gil purposefully getting in the way (wake can be seen from Ady Gil's motors). Video below shows Japanese boat turning into the Ady Gil.
Honestly, I think the activists got what they deserve, and will receive no sympathy from me. |
I agree, I heard the activists say they were trying to put the boat in reverse, but the video doesn't support that.
I do feel a little sorry to see such a sweet boat get demolished. |

Fair enough. It seems like it doesn't take much for an animal to be inducted into the endangered animal hall of fame, though. Especially considering it is difficult to obtain data on such things.
Japan still has the right to hunt whales or any other animal it sees fit, in international waters or in its own territories. All everyone else can really do about it is belly ache and pay lip service (especially pols to win a few votes) like they have always done. |

Not quite true there is the law of the sea. And Japan has ratified it. Plus by the same argument, if Japan can do what it wants then so can the protesters |

Wow, from that it looks like the Japanese whalers hit the boat intentionally.
And they power hosed the crew of the damaged boat immediately after. |
