Turkey had reportedly recalled envoy after Israel declined to issue formal apology for 'humiliating' treatment by deputy FM.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon sent a letter of apology Wednesday night to the Turkish ambassador to Israel, after he had subjected him to "humiliating" treatment during a meeting in Jerusalem on Monday.

The letter of apology was issued at the culmination of day-long talks between Ankara and Jerusalem, made after the Turks announced that Ayalon's first apology was insufficient, and Jerusalem vowed no second apology would be made.

Ayalon had issued an apology on Tuesday night, but Ankara had threatened to recall Ahmet Oguz Celikkol if no second, formal apology was made. According to Turkish media reports, this step had been taken, with Celikkol set to return Thursday morning after Israel said no such apology was on the table.

"This is the final decision on the matter," said a senior Foreign Ministry official earlier Wednesday, referring to a second apology. The decision was made during consultations between the Foreign Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office, officials said.

Summoned Monday by Ayalon over an anti-Israeli television show aired in Turkey, Celikkol was made to sit in a chair lower than that of the deputy foreign minister, while the Turkish flag was deliberately not on display during the meeting.

Turkey's English language version of the Hurriyet has a deailed article about Israel's apology. The comments below are really revealing of how many people in Turkey feel about this. Most of the people are gloating thinking that Turkey showed Israel they can't mess with the Turks. A couple people had more intelligent responses.

The TV show that was mentioned is Kurtlar Vadisi (Valley of the Wolves). It has the same name as the anti-American Turkish movie made a few years ago and comes from the same media franchise. There was an episode that showed Mossad agents kidnapping Turkish children. The show is about the Turkish mafia and it's perhaps Turkey's most popular show. I haven't watched more than a few minutes of it, mainly because I don't understand Turkish well enough to watch an entire show in the language. The few minutes I did watch seemed really lame. Men were sitting around a table while the camera zoomed in on their intense facial expressions and played dramatic music.
