Ok, you lots have helped me so far...once again I call for help.

I got the movies on my harddrive (from DVD) and they are all about 8 GB, but I've only 4.7GB DVD-R disks....didn't realise that until burning.

Any ideas on shrinking the files? I didn't see any larger disk sizes at the shop.

The only program I have for DVD burning is Roxio DVD Creator 6, but just used the 'drag to disc' function.

Ayuda me!

Shoosh!

Often you'll wind up with problems like this. What you need to do is identify which .VOB files are the feature, and seperate them from all of the commentary, special features, etc.

Even then it may go over, in which case it's time to get into compression, which if you don't know what you're doing can be rough. Basically you'd have to rip it into a certain MPEG format and then burn it as a VCD.

I tried this, but was only left with the option of deleting files to fit the 4.7 GB max.

Hank, you are right, compressing the files is difficult for me...and I'd rather not put the films into VCD format, as I'd like to keep the DVD features for future use. The films were put on one disk, so it shouldn't be difficult (well, for smart people, unlike me) to be put on one disk...I mean, what GB are the disks the movies come on?

Strangie...

Well, in answer to one question, DVD movies usually come on 9.4 GB (2 layer) disks. So, that would explain why the file you want to burn is 8 gigabytes.

At the moment, each side of a dvd disc has either 1 or 2 layers. A single layer disk holds 4.7 gigs. At the moment, dvd burners only burn single layer disks, but IIRC, dual layer dvd burners will be hitting the market later this year (or may have already.)

So, like one of the above posters said, you will have to find a way to cut out the parts of the dvd you don't want to get it down to the magic 4.7 GB number.

Wish I could be more help, but I messed around with burning dvd's last summer and it wasn't worth the headache to me. Good luck.

Thundarr has the right technical idea.

There are programs for this very application.

I think popular ones are DVDShrink and DVDXCopy (or something similar).

A fair few people I know use these apps regularly, but I'm not a user myself so I don't know specific names.

Just throw in a DVD, and it'll create a shrunken image, which you burn onto DVD.

Presto.

Here's an ignorant question from me: Are there, or will there be, double-sided DVD-/+R or RW, 8+GB discs on the market? Or will the technology inherently never support that?

There aren't at the present, and truthfully I don't think it's something they're even working towards. Technically, it's possible to do now, and it's been possible to do with CD-R's for years upon years now. All these discs are is plastic with a subtrate of dye that reacts to a laser sandwiched between a thinner sheath of plastic. Those guys are talking about double layered (two layers of dye), not double sided DVD's. Big difference.

What they're working on right now are higher capacity DVD-/+R media, beyond even the 8-9GB mark. I can't recall the source, but I'm pretty sure such media already exists, it's just very expensive and hasn't been put out there to the public yet. Pretty much just in the proof of concept stage.

I use DVD Shrink, followed by Nero Classic to burn.

You can download the program for free.

I was told that dual-layered burners will be on the market by Spring/Summer. Maybe later, as they wait to sell off all of the single-layer machines.

Marketing, ya know.

And no, there aren't dual-layer disks for sale yet.

I can't even find 8x discs for a single-sided burner, at least as of last month.

Hmmm, a shrunken image...again, not what I'm shooting for. Kinda would like to watch the DVD's on my 40" boob-tube...maybe I am misunderstanding the 'shrunken' bit.

Guess I'll have to compromise somewhere...shrunken image VS deleted scenes. After all, I can't store 100GB of movies forever....where would I store the goodie flicks?

Shoosh!

Ah, thanks for that. I was incorrectly imagining them like two sides of a pancake, or an LP. Seems a bit like characteristics of magnetic floppies 20 years ago, which were "dual sided" and/or "dual density" (DS/DD).

My wife thinks talk like that is SO sexy.

Um the image itself doesn't get shrunk. It still stays at MPEG-2...what they mean is it will take out the extra audio functions and extras...so essentially "SHRINK" down the packaging.

I'd suggest this:

Stop being so cheap. If you actually ENJOY all the scenes of a dvd, BUY THE ORIGINAL.

If I really enjoy a movie and want the "extras" I pay for it...that is why I buy the dvd. It supports the companies that make them, and helps them continue their business.

Another benefit of being on such a high horse is that you're always the first to know when it rains.

Cheap, hardly. I literally could skip (an' jes, I skeep) over to Wal-Mart and buy a DVD for the same price (if not cheaper) than what it is costing to burn.

For me, burning/downloading has never been about saving money...

Yes, it's clearly been about hassles and unnecessary time-consumption. You must be the toast of every party that you attend.
