Last year many foreigners took advantage of the free ultramarathon on Jeju (50k is min. distance but you can also drop out without penalty). The Korean Ultra Marathon Fed. is again offering this March 27/28

I did the race a few years ago and had a great time. Nothing more beautiful than Jeju at this time of year!

Funny that you brought this up as I just emailed the guy about it. I'm definitely interested in it, but here's the thing...I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in May...do you think its even possible to be prepared enough to run/walk that??? 50K in 7 hours is a lot.

I did a one-off 3 month marathon training program. I didn't take it seriously, drank large amounts of beer the nights before my long runs, never changed my diet and just ran the required miles. I still finished it in 4.5 hours. So you'd only need to do 5 more miles in 2.5 hours (though the last 6 miles took me 1.5 hours).

Marathons are easier on the day than the actual training. You tend to live up to the occasion so to speak. Just do half and hop out.

You'll have no problem run/walking 50k in 7 hours. It is a lot easier than most people imagine. I'll tell you why.

I see so many people running and then at the later stages walking a marathon. Dead to the dogs. But if they started walking from the start line and most importantly, did it with regularity, so the body knows what's coming, it wouldn't have been a trauma at all. I really believe so much in this. A person can do a walk/run marathon in 4 hours then go out dancing that evening - with less training than the guy who guns the first 10k and then starts walking / running and then mostly walking then not moving for the next few days.

Believe me. I know. I've run a 100k in just over 7 hours and then went out dancing.

If you are doing a half in less than 2 hours. You can walk/run a 50 no prob. in 7. Given you do it regularly right from the start. AND You'll even be able to go dancing that eve! Further, it will help your half time -- training you to burn fat properly and use that wonderful fuel resource that so few mid level athletes really utilize well/fully.

big problem with it is its the week after the seoul international marathon which a bunch of us are running (it will be my first full) and is a huge event in itself

btw just got hal higdons marathon training guide book looks pretty good

now to get up tomorrow and do 20k, first time since i did the hi seoul half in oct, did 15k on the treadmill last week, not going to be fun

Oh yeah, I wouldn't advise doing much for a week or more after...that's the general rule. Actually, for those less hardened, might be 4 weeks or more.

However, although we all come in different packages and responses - I don't recommend a marathon without "TIME". Meaning, if you aren't eating lots of grits, getting lots of time on your feet - you shouldn't consider a marathon. Not something to do without 3-4 weeks before working up to being out on your feet for 2.5-3hrs. Without that, it is just masochism (like all those Japanese) or stupidity. How fast, doesn't work into it. It is all about that time and adapting your fuel burning. Faster athletes/those trained, can get away with less of this (but would do better with it).
