which certification is preffered in korea

They do not care. Most Korean employers are not sufficiently interested in these qualifications. Probably as most of them are online certs and Koreans are dubious about qualifications obtained online.

The only use for these kinds of certs in Korea is if you are a public school teacher and you want the 100,000 won pay rise which you can get if you have one. I believe the cert. must be of 100 hours duration to qualify for this pay rise.

It might possibly also make the difference for an employer between 2 equally qualified candidates seeking the same job but not often.

hey thanks for the response! very helpful.

If I do a course, I'll make sure it's 100 hours rather than 50. I only plan on being in Korea for a year, so I probably won't be getting any raises anyway. I might just get a certification to make myself more comfortable teaching classes. I've never taught before.

I haven't done any research into hogowans (sp?) vs. public schools, so I don't know which one I want to teach at yet. I guess if I decide public schools are for me, I'll make sure to get a certification for that extra 100,000 won

TESOL is the acronym used by British English bunch.
TEFL is acronym used by American English bunch.
