ok, i'm looking into a job in Gangnam. They don't provide apartment, but offer 900,000 won/month for a house. I don't have any money saved up so I really don't have the option of staying at a hotel while I look for an apt. How easy is it to find a place to live in Gangnam? Whats a realistic time frame for that? Would it be possible to show up and get an apartment that day or the next? Lastly is 900,000 won enough,, i'm guessing it is but thought I should ask.
One more thing, I'm traveling with a dog,, would that make it that much harder to find an apt.? |

Is your school giving you any key money? Key money here is a one time deposit that your landlord holds onto until you move out. You always get it back. It usually ranges from 5 million to 10 million won. Not a small amount of money. There are many people with pets here, some people never even meet their landlord and all monetary transactions are done through ATM or in the beginning through the realtor. But it's always best to ask or let the realtor who's looking for an apartment for you know that you have a dog. You certainly don't want any trouble later on telling you that your best friend has to be evicted! Here's a website that has many apartment in Seoul, especially the Gangnam area. www.nearsubway.com |

I assume your applying for the Gangnam District Education Office positions?
If it is ask the guy (Manpal) about housing and getting assistance. He can put you in contact we current teachers and they can help you there. Also, if you look at edenrealty.co.kr you can find housing with lower key money than gangnam. You could also negotiate with the landlord to reduce key money for higher monthly rent. That is many one room apartments on this site will be around 500/600 a month with key money at about 5 million. Negotiate to increase the monthly rent while reducing key money.
From Itaewon it is an easy bus ride to gangnam about 25 mins (of course depending on traffic over Hannam Bridge. |

Yes, to be honest it probably would. I just signed a new lease a few days ago in another very popular part of Seoul. Out of the seven or eight apartments I looked at, not one of them allowed pets. In another high-demand area such as Gangnam, I would hazard to guess that it's also a "landlord's market," so they are probably also unlikely to allow dogs. Always ask though.
You probably already know this, but you'll also need to get your hands on 10 million won or more in cash up front to secure a place in most (if not nearly "all") the places in Gangnam, if the hagwon doesn't provide that. This can be a bit of an obstacle for many foreign teachers in this country. |
