Is it just me or does anyone else experience neighbours above you who seem to be purposely stomping their feet when walking. I thought they don't wear shoes in Korea but sometimes it sounds like they have heavy workboots on and doing the goose step or something. |

If you don't mind the eternal sleep
I used to have the same type of upstaurs neighbour - stomping, moving furniture, ordering food at 3AM, doing the laundry or taking showers between 2AM and 5AM... I shifted my day/night cycle by 8 hours just to compensate.
Then I got my hands on earplugs (praise 3M!) and I've never slept better! Even now that the old neighbours have moved on and the current ones are very quiet, I keep using them. Just make sure you have a strong alarm clock. |

My old officetel was a bit of a nightmare, really thin walls. Earplugs are a must. |

Many koreans, especially older men, walk like ducks, especially when they're not in a hurry to go anywhere. So imagine how a duck walks, and then think of a human. You got the weight of a human leg and foot, led by the heel, slamming down on the hardwood floor, one after the other. There is no grace involved nor consideration for the person below.
I'm half korean and have 4 uncles in Korea, and they all walk like that. |

Luckily, I have never experienced that regular occurrence. I get little episodes here and there with people moving in and having a one time party, or some other event which involves them taking up the whole street with cars parked, and one morning I woke up to a grandfather chucking my stuff out of a small house I was staying in. A family was going to move in the following month, and the grandfather decided to do some cleaning |

Had that happen. Told my Korean coworker. Coworker immediately called landlord. Landlord warned them. No more noise. |

Move to the top floor. Problem solved. Then you can be the furniture-rearranging, duck-walking, 4am showering bad neighbour!
I live on the top floor and it's wonderful. But you still get noisy neighbours from each side |

I have this problem also. The lady above me sounds like she wears heels all the time in her apartment. The worst part is she walks around like a mad women from 5am to 6am, so if I wake up from this or something else there is no way to fall back asleep until she leaves. I have a fan and run it and it did help. But the clincher was my girlfriend went up and "talked" to her one morning. Now I hear nothing. Because of the language barrier I would not have approached, but problem solved.
Fan does help a lot (just make sure your windows are open ) |

Everyday at about 11, I have a next door neighbor that starts this weird chanting thing really loudly. ~.~ Freaked me out for about a month. |

IF you cant write/speak korean, ask a co-worker to write an anonymous note and chuck it on their door. They will never know for sure who did it, and if its polite its not a problem.
Ive always had the phone numbers of my neighbours, and if the kids are too noisy or anything i/my gf give them a call...or if im too meek i leave a note. No ones ever been offended and the noise has stopped.
Ive even had them come and ask me to turn my music off, although they are pretty reasonable and let me party every so often with no complaints (bringing me hangover cures the next day ) |
