I am coming back to Korea soon and need some tips because I don't plan on being antisocial.
What can I do to make the torture of sitting on the floor with my legs under teeny-tiny tables less, well, torturous?
Two aspects to consider: 1. leg joint flexibility, and 2. posterior numbness aka rear end comas aka arseache.
Seriously, any tips greatly appreciated! |

Okay, here's why I posted: I genuinely wondered if anyone had any tips.
Okay, this is not why I posted: I wanted people to give me useless three-word answers. |

Try to get a seat where the wall is right behind you. Then you can rest your back on it to relieve some stress. Also, try to wear comfortable pants, if possible. And after the meal feel free to stretch those legs out while drinking an instant coffee. |

Start sitting on the floor "indian style" and increase the time you can hold that pose. When I first came to Korea it was impossible but you end up sitting on the floor all the time, places where you eat a friends house etc. You might even have a sofa in the room but most Korean people just want to sit on the floor. The floor heating that the apartments have here is a main reason why most enjoy sitting on the floor. |

I have really long legs and kinda stiff joints, and never sit on the floor back home in America, so this was hard for me at first. But the most important thing to remember about sitting on the floor is that the flexibility is in your hips, not your knees. You can actually injure your knees trying to sit cross-legged on the floor if your hips are not flexible enough. If you're sitting correctly you should not have knee pain. Practice gently stretching your hip flexors and hamstrings before sitting on the floor, this will increase your hip mobility and make it easier on your knees.
Also, try to arch your back inward so your butt sticks out and lean forward a bit, so you're sitting more forward on your pelvis, if that makes any sense. That will help with the buttache. |

Many people struggle with this. Especially in their first few months. Most people get used to it.
In my apartment I mainly sat on the floor. I've never been a flexible person but I bought a couple of those floor cushions and got used to it pretty quickly. |

I agree. I've noticed this too. |

My legs fall asleep. I absolutely hate sitting cross legged style. I've not gotten used to it after some years here. |

How I deal with this problem is very very simple; I don't sit on the floor to eat. When I go out with koreans for dinner, I let it be known beforehand that I don't sit on the floor. Table and chair. Never ever had a problem...and I eat out more than often with koreans. |

I simply refuse to do it, and if no option I will fuss a lot and show them that I am in constant pain. |

Bingo. I tell everyone I dont care what we eat, but there must be chairs. Cant enjoy a meal when you are in pain 20 minutes into it. |
