Hi those of you who are in the know about these things.
In Ireland we have the choice of doing CELT, approved by our own Dept of Education and recognised by the British Council, and CELTA.
CELT costs 850-1050 euro
CELTA costs 1610
Is CELT well known in Korea?
Any help would be much appreciated |

Hi Maxboss
Neither of these is well known in Korea and a practical qualification is not necessary for the majority of jobs here. Most people's advice on here would be , if you want to stay in Korea for a long time and move into University teaching you should get an MA in TESOL or related subject. If you want to teach for a couple of years in Korea then move into another profession, get the cheap online TEFL certificate. If you want a career in TEFL in other countries, especially Europe, do the CELTA. As far as the CELT is concerned, it depends on the number of hours it is and the number of hours of practical teaching and observation it contains. Although it may be recognised by the British Council, schools which may not have heard of it could disregard it so I'd advise you, to be on the safe side and have as many options as possible, to pay the extra and get the CELTA. If, as I say you see teaching EFL as a long term option. |

I agree with everything above except this one line.

In the above scenario, you wouldn't need anything at all. I agree about the MATESOL for uni jobs and the CELTA for the option of working in other countries.
The only need for any kind of EFL Cert. in Korea, is for the 100,000 pay rise I believe it gets you in public school positions. This requires a cert. of 100 hours duration. The name is unimportant. |

You may not even need a CELTA for other countries you plan to teach in.
Beware of marketing hype.
Do your research. |
