so my boss wants to get me to start teaching the TOEIC speaking course.
she's ordered in some books for me and is giving me a few months to familiarise myself with things by dropping bits of the course into my usual middle-school classes.
eventually she wants to get me to teach this course properly to middle schoolers and adults.
I have no idea yet what the course entails - I skimmed through a few toeic speaking books, which all seemed very boring and repetitive.
Is there any advice to be given?
What is toeic used for? Is it just another arbitrary qualification? boss seemed to suggest it was something that kids could use on uni applications, which begs the questions why do adults want it?
If people have done it before, how have you found this in relation to say normal middle-school classes?
(I've already decided to take the option as it gets me out of teaching a few kindy classes - I get on really well with my middle schoolers, but find it hard to relate to kindergarten classes ...) |

Do a Google search and type, "TOEIC". Read the Wikipedia article and the information on ETS's site, for starters. You should probably buy Hackers's TOEIC books, as well.
It is a bit silly for kids to study TOEIC, as it is designed for working adults, but whatever. |

| TOEIC is a standardized test for Business English. It is very difficult even harder than TOEFL because it is filled with business jargons and idioms. If you teach it for middle schoolers they will be miserable. They do have some versions that are geared for that age group but aren't really the same level as adults. A lot of listening exercises. |

This is mostly true, but no way is the TOEIC harder than the TOEFL. The concepts might be oriented for adults on the TOEIC, but the overall difficulty of the passages and exercises is much lower.
Still, I agree that middle students would be miserable studying it, which I why I think it's silly for them to take such a course in the first place. |

why miserable?
most of the exercises are alot easier than our old work (has anyone ever used a book called 'hot topics'? Its ridiculous, chapters involve 'white collar crime' and 'sports doping')
I got the books the boss ordered for me today. They're all in korean ... I'm not sure what she expects me to do with these (I've been here for 4 months)
I can work use all the practice exercises but I really need a marking scheme for this test before I can do anything effective and more interesting that test question prep. |
