My current public middle school wanted to hire someone to replace me, but they were too high on the pay scale. They asked me if I wanted to stay (I'm not), but if I did, then they wouldn't pay for my flight to and from America (to see family), because they want to save money.

I'm going private after my current contract, so I'm not too concerned.

I'm just wondering, is this "no refunds for flights" the current trend, or are they just testing to see how many desperate people will agree to such terms? And can people who agree to the "no refunds for flights" negotiate other terms (example: I will pay my own flights, but I get to replace summer and winter camp time with personal vacation time.)?

This is a similar trend in some GEPIK areas.

if that flight back home clause is in your contract (and it most assuredly is) it's not negotiable unless you willingly give it up.

personally I'd only consider doing it in exchange for extra vacation time and elimination of all desk warming during school holiday periods (summer, winter, spring)
