I worked at a YBM branch (along with my roommate) from October 27th '08 to October 31st '09. The school always paid on time and even had our final pay + bonus in our accounts before we left which was good. They said they had to wait for all of our bills to come in for November to deduct what we owed them and then they'd wire us the deposits back. The deposit was 600,000 won. Well needless to say we still haven't received the deposits. We left our apartment in considerably better condition than we arrived (it was disgusting mess and the school didn't hire us a cleaning lady) and even over payed a few bills prior to leaving, so at most the school should be deducting less than 100,000 from each of us. I emailed my boss in December to confirm that we were going to recieve our deposits soon and she said they were just waiting the last of our bills to arrive. I emailed again the first week of January and was told they had received everything and were just calculating the amount and would deposit it shortly.

This seems like an excessive time to wait. To make matters worse, it seems as if the school was in some financial trouble when we left as many of the kindergarten students had left, planned renovations were put off, foreign teachers who had left were not being replaced, some Korean teachers were not replaced and everyone's schedule was being maxed out in terms of their hours (a far cry from the 90 or so hours a week we worked when we first showed up).

What's the next step? Who should we contact? We're both positive the school has our correct Canadian and US bank account information.

Thanks

I also worked at a YBM branch and it took them quite a while to get my deposit back to me. My contract ended at the end of September and I just received my deposit back at the beginning of this month.

You will probably get it soon. Did you work for a YBM franchise, or for a company-owned school? If it's company-owned, you will definitely get it back. If you don't, contact the head office. If it's a franchise, then there's not much you can really do except for continue to pester them or contact the labor board, although I know nothing about doing that and am not sure if they could even help.

Wow that's quite a while...
It's a franchise, thanks... I'm just a bit worried since they said it should be there by now and I do know the school was having some financial difficulty.

What it be best to contact the labour board or YBM head office since it is one of their franchises?

If it's a franchise school, the YBM head office can't do anything for you. They're not associated at all, other than the name. They only deal with company-owned schools.

I don't know about contacting the labor board...look around these forums and the FAQs and you should find the right info.

Good luck!
