I'm a little concerned that upon arriving at customs Korea Air or Asiana is going to go through the files on my Laptop (or even iPod) and decide that all that pirated stuff justifies them confiscating my laptop.
So my question is, to what degree do they go through your laptop at customs for Korean Air/Asiana? |

They won't go through your stuff. They will wave you through. Just walk out, they don't ever stop me, been doing it for 14 years. |

Why would you be against them taking your laptop, if you yourself steal all the time? |

how would they even know it was pirated? how would they have time to look through files on everyone's computer? or even 1/1000 people's computers?
even if they did i would just say, "i bought all of these movies and cds and then i threw out the cds because they are on my computer" |

1. @"There's not way they can know it was pirated." Exactly, on top of that, file-sharing is legal in many countries (was in Spain just years ago). So what is "pirated" varies from place to place.
2 @"You steal all the time." When you have a chance look into the history of IP law and consider that IP isn't a zero-sum game. Then we'll talk about social harm and copyright. Or I could just quote Judge Posner, "Overprotections stifles the very creative forces [such laws] are supposed to protect." But I have a feeling I'm wasting my time. |

I remember hearing something about border crossings between Canada and the USA being tightened up due to pressure from the recording industry over pirated software/mp3s.

Yeah that's pretty deep. I'm going to have to go with a (mylipsareslead) smiley.

At first when I read this I understood it the other way around (luggage = carryon).
It's been so long since I've flown; do planes have wifi?

Honestly, I have no clue... but I needed to check, just to be sure. I supposed that even if they did - one should never underestimate the power of denial.

I was going to post this in a separate thread, but I'll just put it here:
Power bars: I'd like to bring one, but should I just get one when I arrive there, or is it possible to plug one into a converter and then connect all my North American male plugs into it? |

Seriously delete the pirated stuff.

I'm going to have to stick with the "how will they know" guys. Asia is really lax about pirated stuff, probably to a greater extent than Canada.
Besides, we're talking a lot of stuff, a lot of which isn't available anymore. |

Why would a customs officer do that? You put your laptop through the XRAY machine but that is it. |

I bought a laptop in Korea and later found out that all the Microsoft applications installed on it were pirated. This is not uncommon in Korea if you buy from smaller retailers at a bargain price. Having pirated software doesn't always mean you broke the law knowlingly. They really won't care, if they check it, which they won't.
CARRY IT ON! You'll be fine. Really. You're heading to a country where people sell bootlegged DVDs out of small stalls in subway stations without any fear of persecution and academic institutions have printers make copies of texts so they don't have to pay publishers prices. Nobody's going to bat an eyelid because your copy of Word isn't genuine. |

Seeing as everyone and they baby mama have a laptop, there is simply no way that it's feasible from a 'not pissing everybody off' standpoint. It would take hours to get thru and bballi bballi, seo-bi-seu obsessed Korean populace would simply not tolerate that. |
