http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=254277004820
so a friend who teaches in Korea (I live in Taiwan, but want to move to Korea) sent me a facebook invite to that group.
Is it for real? Is it serious? |

We--a few friends and I--were just talking about this today: getting mythbusters to take it on. |

Yes, that is a real Facebook group.
What are you asking exactly? |

Sorry, i was asking if the stories/links on the site where accurate, not whether the group was real. I don't know much about the idea, so when I read the articles describing fan death I wasn't sure if it was a joke or not. |

Wasn't there someone on here who helped Mythbusters with research re: the "rocket launcher" Korean invented?
If I remember correctly, he said that he brought up fan death with them but they said that it was too ridiculous to even spend time on (or something to that effect). |

Aww man, and I wanted to be one of the many Dave's posters who argues that Koreans lack critical thinking |

I think this would actually make for a very interesting segment on Mythbusters. They could cover the whole: chop air molecule angle, the fans 'sucking' angle, the 'freezing' angle.
Lots of different ways to handle this. |

What a foolish and asinine article.
The author sets out a very narrow set of conditions which are far more specific than the general fan death hypothesis (Extreme heat, dehydration, non oscillating fan pointed directly at face)
He then extrapolates a minor safety issue electric fans "can speed the onset of heat attributable conditions" into causal evidence for 'fan death'
We should note that the EPA pamphlet relates to temperatures above 37.22 Celsius, something that rarely if ever happens in Korea.
A dry sealed convection oven is a perfect parallel to a humid Korean summer. |

Agree with the sentiment of a previous poster. Why on earth would Mythbusters devote even a second of their time on something as blatantly ludicrous as fan death.?Korea is the only country in the world that believes in this(as far as I know). Outside Korea, nobody would give a rat's petootie about it. It would be laughed at because it is so completely false. It ranks up there with such things as "Light death". Yes, some people die in a room with the light on, so it must be investigated. Mythbusters looks at things that can be disputed, not those that are so patently false that they are beyond dispute. |

A bunch of us sent the same thing to Mythbuster's during season 2. Their reply was "There would be no interest in a myth that takes place in one unknown country". I can see their reasoning. |

That was my thought exactly. Other than those of us who have a direct interest in Korea, the rest of the world practically doesn't even realize the place exists. |

I think we all remember how ridiculous it was, and absolutely unbelievable, when we first heard of fan death. Unbelievable that people could ACTUALLY believe in that. That is how mythbusters probably thinks of it. Something unworthy of a myth. Since the show is really intended for North American audiences, most North Americans would sit bored throughout the whole segment waiting for it to be over...
But it would be nice, for the people in Korea, to see such an episode. I wonder if they could make one specifically for Korea!? |
