I'm an American citizen with a 1 year multiple-entry E2 visa ending Aug. 2010, and a 6 month contract ending Feb. 2010. I want to stay in Korea and study for a few months. Eventually I want to find another job.

Can I legally stay in Korea on my current visa once I stop working?

If I ask my employer to cancel my visa how much time do I have before I must leave and re-enter on a tourist visa?

Because I worked less than 9 months (but completed 100% contract) will I have any trouble applying for a visa before Aug. 2010?

Thank you for any replies, this site is really helpful.

I don't quite understand what you want. Are you planning on leaving the country and getting a new visa or are you wanting to stay in country without leaving?

If you want a new visa make sure that your boss informs immigration when your contract expires. Leave the country hand in your ARC, go to a Korean consulate and get a new visa.

I just want to understand my options. I'll edit the original post to make it clearer though, thanks.

If your visa is canceled from the school, which it probably will be so that they can hire another teacher and give him/her the visa, You cannot stay in Korea. I think that you have 2 weeks to leave but I am not exactly sure.

Once your visa is canceled at immigration, you leave the country and go to a consulate to get a new visa no big deal.

That 9 months is for staying in country and transferring visa to another school.

I have never done 6 months contracts so I really don't know about your situation first hand. Most people that don't do a full year contract usually leave the country.
