I currently have two offers. One is from Avalon with an afternoon shift. The other is a small school where I would be the only native teacher (morning hours). The pay is the same at both and the location is comparable.

Small school in the morning... kindy classes? Do you mind what age group you teach?

I dont like kindy classes, but I loved working in a small school where I was the only teacher. They seemed to value me a lot more there, wasnt just a number and wasnt being compared to the other teachers like my friends were...

I would never teach in a small school without other foreigners, unless you already have friends here.

Wasn't it Avalon that tried to confiscate their foreign teacher's passports during the swine flu scare this summer?

I worked for a big name hagwon chain before and would never attempt it again.

As long as you are outgoing then being the only foreigner in your hagwon should be OK.

Hope this helps!

I would never work for a big chain school unless you like the idea of slavery.

Although there are certainly chains here and there that keep things very above-ground--- YBM comes to mind--- I concur.

Obviously the practices at different branches can vary, but Avalon has a rep for pulling a lot of dirty tricks, and firing people on a whim if the parents complain, without stopping to weigh how many parents are complaining or whether the complaints have merit.

It depends on the school I think. I worked for for a big chain franchise for 3 years and had an awesome time... but thats probably because my boss didnt enforce the usual meetings/trainings/outings etc that I was supposed to go to, and while I occasionally used the books I also had freedom to choose my own.

Again, another reason I loved working at a small school where I was the only foreign teacher ^^
