There is 신촌 and 신천
They sound almost exactly the same. One is next to Hongdae, and the other is next to Jamsil. Complete opposite sides of Seoul.
I really wish people, when posting/talking about said locations, be more specific about where they are.
"Apartment for rent in Shinchon."
"Stuff for Sale Sincheon".
Which are you referring to? Are you near Hongdae or Jamsil?
Just one of my pet peeves. |

Ah, yes, the two Sinchons.
I recall directing a friend once, told her to meet me in Shinchon, without realising there were two of them. She went to the other one, and got completely lost, but couldn't call cos something was wrong with her phone, she could only recieve calls. She had to borrow a phone to tell me she'll be half an hour late and was taking a taxi. Unfortunately Murphy's Law was really working that day, the taxi driver gave her the run around and when she called him up for it, abused her. She got out without paying, and had to take another taxi, and ended up an hour late. |

New Village or New River? This is why everyone should speak Chinese. |

I know a few people that fell victim to this old classic.
As someone rightly pointed out, its actually a trap within a trap because it's not just an East (sincheon) versus West (sinchon) problem. There are two stations in just Sinchon itself (the place near hongdae).
In relation to the two SINCHON stations that are both near hongdae, one is SINCHON train station, the other is SINCHON subway station on Line 2. They're only a 5 or 10 minute walk from each other, but can be confusing for both you and the taxi driver especially when there's a language barrier.
If you want to go to the subway station, then tell the taxi driver "SINCHON ROTARY."
If you want to go to the train station then say "SINCHON YUK." However, this can still cause problems. Most people want to go to the subway station and the taxi driver knows this....therefore he might hedge his bets and still go to the subway station anyway.
Good lord, what an ordeal. |

No. The difference is "eo" 어 v "o" 오, not "s" v "sh".
"S" and "sh" are not phonemes in Korean, they just did us a favor when they romanized it. |

Either way it sucks. I made the classic go to the wrong station mistake in 2002. Fortunately for me, the chick I was supposed to meet ended up not being worth the chase anyway. |

I lived in an officetel near Sinchon train station (신촌기차역) when I first came to Korea and never had any problems.
Sincheon is near Jamsil. Sinchon is near Hongdae.
If you get into a cab and tell the driver, Sinchon Yuk (신촌역), he'll take you to the subway station at Sinchon Rotary 99% of the time. If you want to go to Sinchon train station/Megabox, then say Sinchon Gicha Yuk (신촌기차역). |
