God I love Thailand. Not because of the women either. My wife always comes with. One thing that drives her crazy, everyone thinks that she is Thai. For those of you who have been there, I think you understand why it would make her crazy...

On our first trip to Thailand, we spent one day in Bangkok and planned to go onto one of the islands. So we went to the train station to get our tickets. In reading the guide book, we realized that there is a shopping type district around there. After getting our tickets, we started heading in that direction. As we are waiting to cross at a cross walk, a gentleman starts talking to us. Boy was he nice. He starts giving us info and what not. He tells us that where we are going basically sucks. But he knows a nice place for us to go shopping. I say sure what the hell, and he gets a tuk tuk for us and we are on our way. On the way to the shopping area, he says that there is a nice little shrine for us to go visit. We stop at this deserted shrine and well it basically sucked. We head on to the shopping area. The tuk tuk pulls up in front of the store, yes you guessed it, jewlery store. I pay the tuk tuk drive and tell him to get the hell out of here, as I finally realize what is going on. People are motioning for us to come into the store. Giving them the I am going nowhere near you look, we head the other direction. The messed up part is this, I knew about this con before heading over there. I read it several times in my Lonely Planet. But, I still fell for it halfway. So we ended up in some residential neighborhood in Bangkok (which I believe is part of their plan to get you feeling like you need the tuk tuk to get back to civilization). Having a great sense of direction, I knew we could get back on foot (wife yelling at me that I have no idea where we are going). I have to say that the walk was one of the nicest walks I had in Thailand. Seeing parts of Thai life that most tourists would never see. By the way, we walked back with no problem at all.

So the scam is that you buy a load of jewelry at this guy's shop or something? I've never been to Thailand, sounds like I need to go, and watch my back

I walked from Ko Sahn Road once to the middle of the city (traffic was at a standstill), so just started walking and walked too far and there weren't any taxis around anymore. It was weird. Totally different Bangkok. Interesting walk however.

It's a pain from Khao San to the subway since you have to get a tuk tuk, taxi or walk quite a ways in the heat possibly with heavy bags.

First day in Bangkok I walked from Pratinum market to Khao San Road with my son on my back.
Hot as hell but great way to see the city.
As I was walking I met a man.
He joined me on my walk for a while and we talked as we went.
When we parted ways I asked him for his name.
Should come as no shock or suprise when he said:
"Oh. You can call me Mr. Kim."

To pick the most 'memorable'
Koh Samui, day before planned journey into Malaysia. I'd been hooning around on the bikes for nigh on 3 months, not a scratch, all my friends had managed to go arse over tit slowing down for traffic lights and things like that - , how hard can it be!!!
Of course, after too much fruit juice I decided a little spin up and down the drag at 3am would be a laugh. I came round in the ambulance at about 4.15. I'd come off at an unlit 90 degree turn in the road, flown through the air and come to rest headfirst in a drain. There was a guy with me in the wagon who had pulled me out by me feet and stayed with me. His first words - 'Where you from mate?' - Turns out he was from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK, same as me, in fact we only lived a few streets away. Anyway from what I remember I was in the hospital about 30mins whilst the nurses dealt with another phlang motorbike injury - 11 stiches in my head and badly cut foot/arm. I spent the next week in my 1 pound 50 a night beach hut learning the true meaning of concussion. I CAN"T BELIEVE they didnt keep me in overnight!!!!

great!!! Laughing

The only rip-off I had was on the slow train from Bangkok to the southern border. I paid for my increadibly greasy floating fried breakfast with a bill. The train hostess proclaimed to have no change as yet and told me she'd get me some before the end of the ride...

The train pulled in and my connecting bus was waiting, as I searched the entire train for her and my several thousand baht change, she must have hid in the toilets.. finally running for my bus, I caught sight of her waving an amused farewell from the train window, smile on her face...

i love southern Thailand- those palm- treed rice fields, overgrown villages and whole tropical flavor...Thailand rocks.

I've done Khao San to Sukhumvit to Patpong and back to Khao San on foot a few times.

Whenever I travel I prefer walking.

Actually, train trips are great in Thailand. You can sleep in those bedded carriages, take smoke breaks on the steps in the warm air, watching the charming world pass by: buy any exotic fruit off the train guards... wave to all the people that live right up against the track.. That trip from B'kok to ayuthayya and beyond is great, it becomes all mountainous.. all those beautifully decorative temples... always a hot chick on the train to chat up...aaahhhh....

Last summer I spent the month in Bangkok doing a CELTA course. I spent the weekends walking - did Siam Square ->Silom Road->Sheraton(by the river)->Up the river->Chinatown->Train Station->Siam Square, all on foot, several times. That's about 6 hours, straight walking (plus walking around exploring along the way). Feet in major pain, but really a fascinating walk.

I noticed that whenever I took my map out just to plot the best route - not lost at all - someone would approach me from out of nowhere within seconds wanting to "help" me. One guy informed me that Siam Square was "closed" that day, and that I should come with him instead. Thanks.

"WHAT HAPPENS IN THAILAND, STAYS IN THAILAND."

Watch the sketch on SNL on AFKN with Saturday.
(Edit: not enough coffee this morning- watch the SNL sketch on AFKN this Saturday)

My story involves the police so I'm going to follow the advice of the quote (but NO- it doesn't involve drugs or sex).

HA! Those guys'll say anything.

One time a guy was telling me something similar so, just to be a *beep*, I decided to see how long I could keep him talking (and wasting his time). About 10 minutes before he decided that he wasn't going to get me to go anywhere and made up an appointment with his friend.

Got on wrong bus once figuring I was going back to my apt. 30 mins. north of BKK. Ended up in another province. Walked around for a while thinking hmmm.... very unfamiliar area.... finally got a taxi, took nearly an hour to get home and was a bit expensive. Ah the joy of being unable to read or speak the language of the people around you.
