Has anyone been to HK?
A visa is not required, right?
How much money would you say you needed just for spending/eating money for three days?
Are taxis expensive?
What do you recommend doing?
And last but not least!
Has anyone stayed in the Novotel Century?
Do many people speak english?
Thanks in advance ^^ |

I went during Christmas.
Most people speak English, and everything is in English. Don't worry about that.
Public transportation there is excellent, the trolleys are about 2,000 won per ride (one way). the subways are at least double the price of Seoul for a ride, if not more. I never took a taxi so no info on that.
We did the star ferry, wan chai, victoria peak, took in some views of hong kong.
We ate at Spring Deer (reservations only) and Sweet Dynasty (highly reccommended!) Both were excellent.
Go to Stanley for the day, it's a nice oceanside cafe/shopping area with a maritime museum which is very English. It's a short bus-ride from Hong Kong. (20 minutes) |

It depends on what you want to eat... Hong Kong has some really expensive restaurants, and also some cheaper ones.
I'd say budget around 300 HKD (50,000 won) on food per day - if you want to eat on the cheaper side. Otherwise go up to 500.

The starting fare is the same as Korea, but I think each incremental fare is a bit higher than Korea.. personally I think it's about the same.

Shopping? Hong Kong is one giant shop...
Shopping aside, though, go to the Victoria Harbour, and the Peak. Go look at Stanley Market.

Not stayed, but went there for dinner once. Pretty nice.

again, depends on where you go. Hotel folks will speak English. Taxis will understand where you want to go. Stopping someone on the street and ask for directions? Hit and miss.
I am going to be there in 8 days. W00t! |

I have been there once and am also going again soon. I love HK.
I ate meals for as little as $30 HK for something simple like fried rice.
I am staying in a guesthouse for 43,000 won a night. I would recommend staying in Tsim Sa Chui (sp?) or HK Island. You can stay for cheaper in the New Territories, but it's not worth saving a few bucks.
I would agree. Stanley Market, Shopping Malls, Victoria Peak. Just walk around. It's a cool city.
If you like beaches, there are also beaches, but do your research. Many of them are too polluted to swim in. |

I like to stay at the Evergreen hotel (1 block off the temple street night market) and 1 block from the MTR Jordan Station.
The cost is usually HK$420 and includes breakfast and DSL internet connection. http://www.evergreenhotel.com/ |

Ok, I know this is a technology question, BUT any of you have experience buying cameras in HK? I've read about bait and switch and been advised to avoid the shops along Nathan Rd, but any other advice as we're talking about HK?
I've recently booked at the Casa hotel on asiarooms.com Seems they have a good deal. It was around 200,000won for 3 nights, very close to Temple St. It was a choice between that and the Evergreen as mentioned above. Years and years ago I stayed in the Chung King Mansions and laughed so hard to see they're still on the go. Now that is budget, but they have "rooms" as opposed to dorms for around 15,000won per night.
Expect the shower over the toilet scenario unless you're paying $$$
I'm looking forward to going back as it was still a British territory when I went all those years ago, so I'm interested in what's changed. I remember Temple ST night market and the delicious crispy duck/pancakes dimsum etc. Street food in HK was a good option and there's no need to splash the cash on fancy places unless that's what you're looking for. |
