|
|
I have applied to the University of Birmingham's distance MA in applied linguistics and I am wondering about textbooks. Where do most people go about finding English copies of the textbooks here in Korea (at a decent price)?
Are there other UBirm students that have old copies of the texts they would like to part with? Or even let me borrow, I think I can photo copy the entire book at work and no one would know |

I'm not in the Birmingham program, but any of these sites can have a good price... one better than the other, depending on the book:
www.yes24.com
www.kyobobook.co.kr
www.whatthebook.co.kr
Also, note that some more expensive books have "International Editions" that are far cheaper. One book I had cost over $150 in the USA, but I could buy the SAME book in an International Edition for 39,000 won here. No difference, except for the cover! They do this because they know Asian markets won't stand for a $150 book, and will just pirate. People in the USA, however, are total suckers. This is even more disgusting when the online version costs $75 in the USA! |

Kyobo
Bandi & Lunis
and some others were always my first choice, especially if you live in Seoul.
Getting in touch with others in the course, either through the Korean admin center or your tutor, is also a good choice. The reading lists for courses do change from time to time, so be careful you're working off the current one. |

If you are heading to China, you can get them really cheap. |

You have the right idea about copying books. Any college copy center, or the ones located just outside the campus, will copy books for you and put on a cover. I'd say 7-10,000w for your average Cambridge or OUP book. Just be sure you request double-sided, and if you prefer flat bound spine or ring bound. People can build quite a collection this way. |
