I do not like the working environment at my present school. I would like to start searching for new job positions. Do I have to fly to Japan or back to the U.S. to obtain a new visa or is it true that if you have been here for six months, your current visa can be transferred over to your new position?

You will have to leave country, but you have to get a letter of release from your employer. If your employer is really nice they might transfer the visa but much more likely you will just need a new visa. Going to Japan is the easiest way, and try to get your new employer to pay for it, since they won't pay for your flight.

a letter of release is only necessary if you are going to transfer to a new employer and you dont need to leave korea to do it.

leaving korea and reapplying for a new visa does not require an LOR.
