All of the big internet service providers in South Korea provide services in most of the heavily populated places of up to 100Mbps uplink/downlink synchronous. Some buildings are equipped to have only co-axial DOCSIS 2.0 (mostly by SKT's Hanaro Telecom) and/or 50-100Mbps VDSL (mostly by Korea Telecom, or KT), and the two services are asynchronous even when the maximum download speed goes up to 100Mbps.

It is exceptional if your internet service is truly five times slower than what is commonly provided in the US, Seattle or NY or wherever, at reasonable cost (meaning under 20~30 USD/month.)

I'd have to agree and say that my internet back in Cali was a lot faster. Then again all the sites I visit are American sites. That probably makes a difference.

At home I have something like 30 mb/s up and down and a 2 ms latency to the hub out of the country. Here I can't stream youtube and many pages takes more than 5 seconds to load. I guess a lot of it has to do with the location of the servers though. At my uni it's slightly better, but streaming youtube is not always possible from there either.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said about Canada.

It's like comparing apples to oranges because of Korea's size. The US can't provide hi-speed coverage to all the areas within its vast borders. The article should have also addressed the fact that Korea would not have had the internet at all if it weren't invented in ANOTHER country.

Saying Korea is 500 years behind in manners is pretty ignorant. The states can be just as bad in some areas.
