Until Nate Silver does his thing and demonstrates that the poll is a crock, it's kind of fun to see what the surging GOP has on its mind.
QUESTION: Do you believe Sarah Palin is more qualified to be President than Barack Obama?
YES NO NOT SURE
53 14 33
QUESTION: Do you believe Barack Obama is a racist who hates White people?
YES NO NOT SURE
31 36 33
QUESTION: Do you believe your state should secede from the United States?
YES NO NOT SURE
23 58 19
QUESTION: Do you believe ACORN stole the 2008 election?
YES NO NOT SURE
21 24 55
QUESTION: Do you believe Barack Obama wants the terrorists to win?
YES NO NOT SURE
24 43 33
QUESTION: Do you believe Barack Obama was born in the United States, or not?
NO YES NOT SURE
36 42 22
QUESTION: Should Barack Obama be impeached, or not?
YES NO NOT SURE
39 32 29

Perhaps crying would be a more rational reaction than laughing. Just take impeachment for an example. What scandal can they be thinking of that would make impeachment something to consider? Or, Palin is more qualified to be president (53%). [At 16%, she's 5 points up on any other possible candidate in the poll.]
It seems to me that the best approach in any and all up-coming media interviews for any Republican on any news show would be to ask them to answer these questions on air before moving on to the scheduled topic. |

While funny, you do have to grant that probably 25% of the respondents would probably select the NSDAP over the Democrats in a poll. The same goes for the left and the GOP. |

In all fairness, most of the inane answers were a decided minority. This poll seems to indicate about 25% of Republicans are total idiots, but the same is probably true about 25% of the American population in general, so I don't see this as particularly condemning of Republicans.
The only answer that bothered me at all was the Sarah Palin one. Sarah Palin is objectively incompetent to be President of the United States. Even many Republican politicians have avoided the question when asked whether or not she's qualified. |

You're in a more charitable mood this morning than I am.
When I read that 31% want contraceptives outlawed and another 13% not sure, I read it as 44% of the entire party is bat-droppings nuts. 52% are open to the idea that birth control pills are abortion. 76% think ACORN may have stolen the election. 57% think Obama might favor the terrorists. 58% think he might be a freaking Kenyan. 68% are willing to consider impeachment.
I am, however, willing to discuss the shape of the earth. Common sense tells me the Australians would float off into outer space if the world were round as the Scientific Conspiracy insists. |

I would agree with Yata's interpretation.
If the poll question is "who do you support", not knowing is a perfectly acceptable and valid answer--- still shows a lack of intellect.
But if the question is "Do you believe the earth is flat" and you have three poossible answers: yes, no or don't know. If you answer "don't know", then you are just as stupid as the person answering yes.
Same goes for these poll questions. |

What about people who, for example, said, "Not sure," about possible impeachment because they really don't understand the impeachment process? I think that's totally legitimate. The same could apply regarding ACORN for people who really don't understand the electoral process at all.
Ignorance is a shame, but better they simply admit to their ignorance and say, "I don't know," then try to answer, and realistically speaking, a sizeable portion of Americans probably don't understand impeachment or our electoral process particularly well.
Admittedly this is less of a defense against questions like, "Do you believe Barack Obama wants the terrorists to win?" I don't see how that is even up for discussion, but then again, it just shows Fox News and the Republican smear machine have done a good job. |

Having taught high school, I can tell you that even the dimmest have some idea of what impeachment means, at least till five minutes after the test. The people polled were not just any doofuses off the street. They were self-proclaimed Republicans. A bit more than 10 years ago they impeached a president. No Republican over the age of about 25 would not know what impeachment is. They may be fuzzy about the specific details, but they know the general idea of impeachment is (an attempt to) remove a sitting president from office.
PS: I'm not criticizing you for being charitable. It's a nice virtue to have.

This I entirely agree with. They are masters of the politics of fear. The Dems need to take a few pages out of Roger Ailes book and start applying them, pronto. |

Mainly for handing over trillions of dollars to global banks (ie. allowing them have their financial coup d'etat) and bankrupting the country. But also for things like continuing the illegal wars abroad (incl. war crimes and continued use of torture), extending/expanding the unconstitutional PATRIOT Act, continuing to use signing statements to ram through legislation. etc. etc. Pretty much everything Obama has done is contrary to what he said he would do, and detrimental to the country (although the banking establishment he works for couldn't be happier).
Basically Obama should be impeached for being a sell-out traitor and not defending/upholding the Constitution. Anyway, I'm not a lawyer (so I can't lay out a detailed legal argument for you), but I know a crook when I see one. In Obama's case, it couldn't be more obvious... |
