Moving To Daegu next month and I was just looking for some insight on what the city life is like, specifically; night life, ease of meeting other westerners, and perception of the people. etc. I know, i know, very general, but I've scrolled through so many pages of the forum and my eyes are starting to hurt. Would just like to see what others have experienced. I would appreciate ANY insight with limited ngativity though. I want to be as positive as possible while I'm there. Thanks!! |

Daegu, haha, you're DOOMED. OK wait, no negativity. OK. Then...
the medical leaps forward in antidepressants these days are astounding.
Especially the benzodiazepines. |

Check out www.daegupockets.com and download their pdf for recent events etc.
Meeting people in Daegu is relatively easy, as there are a number of opportunities:
- Bars
- On the streets (there's a restaurant called the Holy Grill and I've seen foreigners hang out near there)
- Facebook network.
Daegu is also a good hub from which to explore Busan, Seoul and the surrounding countryside. |

Ok. Being positive...
We have Costco. And a cat cafe. And it's only 2 hours to Seoul and 1 to Busan on the KTX. |

It's not all that bad, but it does not compare to Seoul or even Busan on many levels.
The nightlife is okay. If you like clubbing, you'll be pretty disappointed. There's a couple spots, but most of them are pretty awful. A new spot just opened up, which is supposed to be a proper house club, but I have yet to check it out. If you're not the clubbing type, there are plenty of decent bars and lounges (including those that appeal to the foreigner crowd).
As far as food goes, there's the costco, a small blackmarket area near downtown, and a decent foreign market for foreign foods. However, there are a few good foreign restaurants (Indian, Italian, Tex-Mex, Viet, Thai, etc).
The student scene is pretty boring (don't let others fool you). The student areas, both Keimyung and Kyongpook, have some decent hangouts, but nothing reflective of the size of the student/city population.
As far as sights or non-drinking activities go, there isn't a whole lot (if anyone knows of any gems, please share).
Overall it's a decent city, but it does not feel like a big city. Korean cities are strange. Daegu is about the same size as Toronto and Chicago in terms of population, but feels more like a city of 500,000.
As someone else said, definitely check out daegu pockets and search for 'daegu friendship club' on facebook.
I've been happy here, but I'm looking forward to a change of scenery for my second year. |
