So, my school reopens on Monday. I figured this was the start of the new semester! But my wife is saying that it doesn't start until March and that this is just like. Some kind of purgatory between semesters. Can someone clear this up?

Mine doesn't re-open until February 8th, but I guess they're all different.

Yes, it is a sort of purgatory between the vacation and the beginning of the new school year in March.

The kids will come back for a couple of weeks and there will be no real learning done. Then there will be another vacation at the end of February. Then they will come back for real...new grades and homerooms and all.

public school?

first 2 weeks of february they're back for another 2 weeks of babysitting with no real teaching or learning done at all. The highlights of those 2 weeks are

1) graduation ceremonies
2) the great teacher re-assignment (or what I call "The Great Escape", when every teacher, especially female tries to get the hell out of my school and into a different Gyonggi-do school)

last 2 weeks of Feb, school is closed.

new semester, aka new/next school year will start on Mar 1.

I love how they waste a month of school here. Finish exams 2 weeks before winter vacation then sit around and watch movies. Come back to school for 2 weeks in Feb and sit around watching movies.

So are we expected to desk warm during the last 2 weeks of Feb too? I'm taking a few days of unpaid leave during the week of Lunar New Year, but I was told i couldn't take 2 weeks, even though we aren't in school. So I'm guessing we'll be in our cold classrooms alone for a while longer?
