I'm looking for ideas but also I suppose experiences.
I lived and worked a bit in Latin America and when moving or traveling to a new place/I carried my birth certificate/criminal background check type documents in a laptop style shoulder bag (laptop in there as well). This included buses, airports and so on.
I never had any trouble but I lived in more or less constant fear of personal meltdown if the bag was ever lost/stolen.
Mailing the documents around the world when you need them would cost a fortune and there's also risk of losing them still.
Aside from making copies of things and stapling your bag to your forearm is there anything else that people have done to prevent simple loss or theft?
I'm thinking of situations like making a visa run to Japan from Korea to give an idea of the kind of trip that seems primed for problems.......
Thoughts, ideas or experiences? |

The only document you need for a Japan visa run is your passport and you have to carry that with you when you travel.
CRCs must be current so why go to the expense and waste the time to carry extras? Order as needed. It doesn't take that long to get one. Same with your transcripts.
Carry a couple copies of your degree (with apostille) and you will be fine and no worry about losing them.

Just assemble all the classified material into a well-organized dossier (a nice leather pouch will do the trick); then place the said dossier into a double-locked, steel briefcase and handcuff it to your wrist. That's what I do when I'm on assignments, and trust me - I've never lost anything that way.
Another tip: If you see some thugs with earpieces and crewcuts heading in your direction, immediately throw the cuff key down a storm drain and get them to chase you onto a passing subway; then deftly step off the train just before the doors close, waving goodbye to them through the window as they're conveyed to the next station, cursing you inaudibly from the other side of the glass. |

Do a high quality scan of all important docs and e-mail them to yourself. Never delete the e-mail. |

Thanks for the ideas guys. I've scanned everything at hi-res of course and will leave copies around for recovery......
Gotta try handcuffing the metal case to my wrist

Hey, juero,
Carry on, man. Carry on. You've got the right idea, bro. Make multiple copies of those docs and keep the originals on your person at all times when transporting them - that's no kidding, man. Best of luck to you!
