His post-racial soaring speech uplifted me, fired me up, and brought hope that change (we can believe in) is possible. Yes we can. |

MOD EDIT
This notwithstanding, the speech was a bit rah-rah, aimed, I assume, at reinvigorating Democratic voters, appealing to all middle-class voters too, as the midterm elections approach.
And regarding this middle-class-appeal, I have heard something from many colleagues that sounds very good indeed. I heard that the president is announcing a new student-loan repayment policy: our payments will not exceed 10% of our income, and any loan balance that remains after 20 years will be forgiven. This is very welcome news, if true. |

I agree with you. It is very welcome news indeed. But no doubt, some people who have already spent many years paying off loans, may be irritated that younger people will now have this new opportunity that they never had. |

Is that 20 years from the date the loan is taken, or 20 years after studies are completed? |

To make college more affordable, this bill will finally end the unwarranted taxpayer-subsidies that go to banks for student loans. Instead, lets take that money and give families a $10,000 tax credit for four years of college and increase Pell Grants. And lets tell another one million students that when they graduate, they will be required to pay only ten percent of their income on student loans, and all of their debt will be forgiven after twenty years and forgiven after ten years if they choose a career in public service. |
It looks to me like it is 20 years after studies are completed. |

The 10-years-in-public-service thing is not entirely new. I believe it went into effect for law school graduates last year. |

Yes. And not just law school students, ALL students. Or at least all grad students. So basically it isn't anything ground breaking.
The 10% limit, however, is. |

Just some factoids:
On Wednesday, January 27, 2010 President Barack Obamas first State of the Union address was carried live from 9:00PM to approximately 10:20PM on 11 networks. The sum of average audience for those networks was 48,009,595 viewers...
Viewership to President Obamas first State of the Union was down 7% from President Bushs first official State of the Union address on January 29, 2002, but up 5% from President Clintons first official address on January 25, 1994:

Personally, I am a big fan of nuclear power. Anyways, I have to wonder if this means that Barack Obama plans to overrule Harry Reid and reinstate the Yucca Mountain Project. |
