Hi all,

I am in the process of developing a 3-month reading comprehension / vocabulary / writing class (4 hours a week). I am looking for a REALLY good sci-fi mystery book for EFL students between the grades 4th and 6th. They ARE returnees and I will be teaching identically to those who are taught in the States.

Do you have any recommendations where the vocabulary and the content isn't necessarily out of reach for them? Titles of books and authors are greatly welcomed.

Can't go wrong with Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card...
You might also want to give "The Giver" a look... Can't remember the author atm though...

How about Holes?

That book fits about the level you are looking at and there are TONS of free teaching resources on the web that you can get access to.

It is sort of a mystery book, in its own way.

As for Sci-fi:

The Ear, the Eye and the Arm by Nancy Farmer was a pretty good read for my grade 7 students. I also did the book with a grade 5 boy I tutor and he loved it as well.

NOt exactly two genres that are that mixed at that age group.

You could try JUMPER or WILDSIDE by Stephen Gould

I used Holes with grade 7. I will also be using the Outsiders with them as well.

Check out that sci-fi book.

I would suggest though, for sci-fi why not do some short stories? There are quite a lot of them out there for their level.

Great recommendation! However, the kids, most of them, have already read a few of them in KOrean.

How about H.G. Wells's The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Invisible Man, The Time Machine or The War of the Worlds? The English is pretty accessible and they're SciFi classics that deal with themes that are especially relevant today. Additionally all of these books have been adapted into films, so you'd be able to show the movie after you read the book.

Way back when I was in 4th and 5th grade, I was a big fan of the Danny Dunn science-fiction series.

Quote:
Danny Dunn and the Anti-Gravity Paint (1956)
Danny Dunn on a Desert Island (1957)
Danny Dunn and the Homework Machine (1958) (Irene introduced)
Danny Dunn and the Weather Machine (1959)
Danny Dunn on the Ocean Floor (1960)
Danny Dunn and the Fossil Cave (1961)
Danny Dunn and the Heat Ray (1962)
Danny Dunn, Time Traveler (1963)
Danny Dunn and the Automatic House (1965)
Danny Dunn and the Voice from Space (1967)
Danny Dunn and the Smallifying Machine (1969)
Danny Dunn and the Swamp Monster (1971)
Danny Dunn, Invisible Boy (1974)
Danny Dunn Scientific Detective (1976)
Danny Dunn and the Universal Glue (1977)

I don't why Raph, but this looked like it had "you" written all over it.

I forgot to mention, you can get these books very cheaply, because they're no longer copyrighted; for free on Google Books, or buy them for >4000 Won each at Whatthebook.com - next day delivery.
