There is a scheme in place that allows people to get more tax money refunded.
You need to register on the Korean government web site. You will need a phone account in your name.
On the website you'll need to provide your phone number. This is the key to the system.
Whenever you make a cash purchase, make sure you give the sales clerk your phone number. This goes on the receipt and the store will forward this information to the tax office.
Based on your purchases, you can increase the amount of tax that is refunded to you.

Good advice, but you can also get a card you can have stores swipe with cash purchases from the same reason...rather than showing or telling your phone number all the time.

It is not a scheme. It is how the Korean government finds out how much you spend. The Korean Tax system takes how much you spend into account when compiling the amount of your tax return.

I carry one of these cards around with me, i get it swiped whenever I pay cash for anything and they give me a receipt. I don't do it for myself though, I do it to allow my boss collect some of his tax back, all the teachers in my school have one.

He is really good to us so if I can help him reduce his tax bill, which I'm sure is quite large, I am only too happy to do so.

Scheme isn't necessarily a negative term. The Hong Kong government, for example, doesn't have programs but schemes. In British English scheme has less the negative connotation than in North America.

Either way, tax breaks are good, scheme or otherwise Very Happy

The system was put into place to encourage consumer spending because you get a tax break and to increase tax collection by making stores record all purchases. It has been successful on both counts. It's also what made credit card use take off so quickly here.

To write that the government "finds out how much you spend" seems to be putting a "big brother" spin on things.

How about using it to get your own refund increased? Has you boss ever given your tax refund to you after he does the tax settlement each year or does he just pocket it? You should ask your boss for your official tax settlement statement for each year you worked there. When he pretends he doesnt know what youre talking about, call 1345. That's the Tax Info line. They can it explain it it to him.

He gives each of his foreign employeess up to 200,000 won for christmas, new year and chuseok.

He takes us for expensive meals every month.

He has purchased everything in my apartment. I even bought a sheet for my bed and he seen it on the receipt I gave him for the tax refund and he gave me the price of it back.

He gave me and my g.f 400,000 won when we arrived.

When I went for an MRI in my first stint teaching here it cost me 350,000 won. That month he gave me a 500,000 won bonus.

He pays the building fees for the apartment (50-70,000 won per month)

When it turned out the tax for the teachers in the school had been underpaid by up to 200,000 won for some of us, he paid the balance as he felt it was his fault for the miscalculation.

In the summer he pays for all the teachers to go to a load of pensions, have a bbq, go on boating trips, etc and in winter skiing is the activity of choice and he has brought all the teachers skiing for the weekend and paid for the passes, equipment, accomodation, food and drink for everyone.

So if you think I can receive more than that back per year then you let me know and I will forgo the bonuses that he provides (which are well over the amount of tax i pay) and I will ask him for my rebate.

****About the tax settlement form, he gives one to us every-year, (if it's the form I think it is) he actually posts one on the board in the teachers room and it shows the amount of tax each teacher has paid, korean and foreign (It was great fun when he did it cos the koreans were able to compare salaries with one another and bitch behind each others backs )

To be honest I feel I am taking advantage of him at times, I don't ask him for any of these, none of the foreign teachers do, he i just a genuinely nice guy who treats us well and I am happy to help him regain some tax back in any way I can. Considering I had factored in my one point whatever % tax into account when I agreed my contract I don't mind paying it!!

I know alot of you guys have been stiffed by their bosses and I also know lots of people in the area who have struggles with their bosses but mine pays on time or before it, has always paid the severence pay (including mine when I finished my contract the first time).

If you speak to anyone who has taught in my school over the past 7 years they will tell you how great he is to work for, they all even remain facebook contacts and keep in regular touch with the principal and some of the former and current korean teachers (who all have excellent English)

so when a poster makes a post saying how they are only too pleased to help their nice boss perhaps you can respond with a question of why he is nice instead of being so negatively judgemental.

Thank you for the excellent post. Your employer is probably the best person I've heard about in the past 20 years.

By the way, where do you work and what's the name of your school?

Cordially,

Yeah, I had no idea how it worked. Now I just use my bank card for everything even if it costs 1 dollar because my wife said then it helps them track what you spend.

Also you get more points on your bc card. My wife said my country's scheme of using a card only for conveiniance was stupid. Sad
