Im not sure how its done in your home state/country but...

An apostille is a verification that the document is legit. In NZ we apply for a CRC with the ministry of justice, and it gets forwarded on to the 'authentication unit' for the apostille. I didnt need to fill out any forms to have it verified, just needed to pay about $45 I think which I organised over the phone with my credit card. They had it all signed and stamped over night and sent out the next day.

You have to get your CBC (Criminal Background Check) apostilled. Make sure that the CBC is from the State or Federal Government (If you're American). If you want to send a copy of your degree instead of your original the copy must be apostilled as well. For State level papers (including your degree) the Department of State will be able to apostille it for you.

I hope you already have the state CBC done.

Otherwise if you're planning to do both and are from a state that isn't in the middle of no where good luck. 3 weeks is really pushing it.

If you're sending your original you don't need it apostilled. If you're sending a copy you do need it apostilled. You'll first need to get a public notary on the copy and then get that copy apostilled. In most cases it's a waste of money since in case the original diploma is lost (extremely rare) getting a new copy from your university isn't that expensive while the cost of getting the notary and apostille plus shipping adds up.

Your CRC in many cases, mine was not it depends upon the school, needs to be Apostillized by the office of the Secretary of State in the state that you reside in. If your in the USA its easy to do. Find out where the office is, give it to them and they will verify that the document pertains to you, and that you are who you say you are. Takes a couple of days for the process.

When you send your diploma just pay the university for another official copy and send that. It's identical to your original except the signatures will be different. It is your diploma the same as the first diploma you recieved when you graduated.

Smile If you don't live in the same city as the university you should be able to send the Uni your student number and obtain one. I don't see how that would be a problem since the degree is not a personal identification document.

The Apostile is the easiest thing to get pretty much. In my case, I live in Michigan, I got my CRC from the state police in about a week by mail. After I had to go to the Secretary of State office, only certain ones in Michigan offer the service, and it cost me a dollar and was done and finished with right there with a stamp and a couple stickers.
