During my EPIK interview in December (which I failed) I was asked how I would deal with the following situation:

"Your co-teacher tell you you have to teach class in 10 minutes. You weren't expecting it, you have nothing prepared, you have never taught this class before and don't know any of the students or what their level is. What do you do?"

I think I said something like I would try to get something together in the 10 minutes before class, and then go do my best. And that later I would ask the teacher to give me more notice before telling me I need to teach (even though I have learned from this forum that this happens all the time).

It doesn't matter anymore, but I am just wondering how other people would have answered this question.

My answer:

Can I expect this a lot? If so, thanks for your time and good luck finding a candidate.

So in other words, until they start paying 4-6mil a month I'll pass on being an "assistant teacher".

They will have no problem finding a candidate. We're just coming out of recession in the west. If you don't understand that then maybe it's time you took a trip home.

The key is that you've never taught the class before, so a round of indroductions would be part of your lesson.

Then, depending on the level, you could try to get the students to ask you about yourself, your life, family etc.

Then you could ask individual students some similar questions.

Not the best, but at least it's something.

If they are younger students, this would not go over well. You could do a short bit of introductions and then sing some songs like;

This is the way we wash our hands,
If you're happy and you know it,
Head and shoulders.
Itsy Bitsy Spider.... etc.

Get the kids standing up and doing some actions.

If you have time left, you could play a game like Simon Says or something.

If the class is older, you could do more with personal questions;
ask them about their life, their families, their town etc.

Other than that, you'd have to have something already prepared that you could pull out at any time.

And they get what they pay for.

I have been home, it is one of the reasons I returned to Asia. However, I am not some 22yr old who just graduated with a BA so fresh you can smell the ink.

And yes, they get what they pay for. I consider myself a professional, and I expect (and do) get paid for that.
