A friend of mine's school has closed down and want to cancel her visa. I don't think she has completed 9 months of the contract, so I don't know how she should go about getting a new job. Is it possible, if your school closed down mid-contract, for someone to transfer their visa to a new school?

Sorry, I know someone has likely asked the same thing before, but Dave's search is screwing around again and I don't have the time to look through all the posts.

If the school officially closed down then yes your friend can get a new Visa. They'll need to ask for a copy of the pae-up shingo which is the official document of closing issued by the government. If they take that in with a new contract (from a new school) immigration will issue a Visa transfer regardless of how long your friend has been at their last position.

I have been told by recruiters that immigration allows transfers in Daegu before the 9 months. Also, I am in Incheon and I was told that I could leave my current job after 6 months. However, I don't know how true this is or if it is just limited to Incheon positions. Possibly, they are short of teachers now and they are easing up the restrictions.

If anyone can confirm this, please do. I am not anxious to leave, but I did mention that I was interested in teaching older students in December. Now, the school seems to be taking it more seriously than I had intended.

Unfortunately anything under 9 months is a gray area as immigration regulations state that it is up to the head of that office to decide on anything under the 9 months rule.
So in some cases immigration will allow you to get your new Visa by either going to Japan or doing it in country. Usually for public schools they give a little more leeway.
If you are planning on quitting your job under 9 months you should be aware that there is a likelihood that you will need to return home.

I think more realistically, there is a likelihood that you will need to leave Korea and come back with a new visa. This means you need all new documents.

Going home is not necessary, and it will most likely be more expensive to do this. Since you would be the one having to pay for the flight home, try other options first.
