Drunk American takes policeman for a ride

Quote:
A drunk American dragged a policeman 100 meters before being caught.

According to the police in Bundang in Gyeonggi Province, the 54-year-old American motorist was asked to undergo a breathalyzer test at 1:55 a.m. Saturday when he took off, dragging a policeman along with him.

The American, identified only as an S, was reportedly driving in and out of the central divider on a street in Bundang.

Upon receiving a report, the traffic police went out to the site and tried to check Ss condition when he took off with one of the policeman hanging on to the door of the vehicle. Fortunately, the policeman was not seriously injured during the incident.

A subsequent investigation showed that S had a blood alcoholic content of 0.225 percent and his drivers license was immediately revoked.

S reportedly said he had four shots of vodka about an hour before he was apprehended."

What are the penalties for waygooks busted drunk driving?

I don't understand why people drive drunk. Take a taxi. Hopefully this guy gets jail time.

Drunk driving is no joke but who is he? His name is "S" and he's American. That narrows it down.

"S" aka "Stupid" will lose his licence for a year, minimum $1000 fine. Same as anyone else. However, since he draged a cop down the street, the newspapers are reporting it, and his blood alcohol level was high enough to blow up the breathalyzer, I'd say he's screwed.

That's up tp the judge. If it was his first offence and nobody got hurt then it might be a bigger fine and a stern warning from the judge. In that case I doubt he will get jail time. The article is right to say fortunately the officer wasn't hurt. If he was, things would be quite different.

If he was driving while suspended, or it's a second offence then his chances of going to jail are much higher.

Depends on his status in Korea - was he under SOFA or something else?

For drunk driving = no.

For dragging the cop = possibly yes, possibly deportation (more correctly, exit order), possibly both.

If he was under SOFA then the JAG my bring related charges to bear as well.

I doubt he was SOFA. He was arrested in Bundang, which isn't really a hangout for those guys.

Interesting; never heard of expats getting DUIs in Korea before, mostly because I don't know many expats with cars here.

What is it with Korean cops and cars?

That's the second time in a few months that a Korean cop has 'gone along for the ride'

They want promotion. I also heard the driver was an English instructor from last night's news.

Here's a thought. Sometimes people don't use their best judgement when they're drinking. Where I live I see Koreans driving drunk on a fairly regular basis on the weekends.

I expect this "gentleman" should start planning his return to Kansas City or Oregon or wherever he is from. He'll probably get deported and never allowed back in. Good riddance to this tosser. 4 shots of vodka indeed.....more like 4 flasks I reckon.
