Always in the past I was able to use just a local crc from home in Texas. I have no problem with the apostille part. That's easy. But I'm clueless how to deal with the State of Texas (statewide) check. I assume it has something to do with the DPS main office in Austin but have been able to find virtually nothing on the process through their website.
I'm now in Seoul. So, I have the following questions for anyone who might know the answers:
1) What's the procedure (paperwork, cost, turn around time, etc.)?
2) How do I obtain necessary paperwork & instructions?
3) How can I deal with this remotely from Seoul (again, I'm NOT in Texas and don't plan to be there anytime in the forseeable future - if I can avoid it)? |

Hey there! I just did this in Fort Worth and it took less than a week to get my background check back. I'm still stateside though. Does the state have digital prints for you or did you send in the fingerprint cards? I'll make some calls when I get home and see if I can find out for you. It may be Monday. |

I was in state when I got mine done a month or two ago, but I have no reason to believe you can't do exactly what I did.
On the Texas dps site, there's a form for requesting name checks by mail. It's not that easy to find and most references to name checks (as opposed to fingerprint checks) on the site either refer you to the online service (which you don't want since those are apparently unacceptable to employers/immigration nowadays) or otherwise fail to link you to the specific instructions on how to word your request, so I've just included the text you need to print out, fill out, and send to dps in my response to your second question.
It costs fifteen dollars, they send you a certified notarized copy if you request they do that in your form (the form text I included in this post below has already been altered to ask for a certified notarized copy), and the time it took for me (a Dallas resident) was probably only a week-- I remember it arrived surprisingly quickly.

Here's where you need to send the request to, how much it costs, and how you should prepare the payment:
"Enclose a $15.00 check or U.S. money order made out to the Texas Department of Public Safety for each individual and mail the written request, fingerprint card(s) and payment to:
Texas Department of Public Safety
Crime Records Service
P. O. Box 15999
Austin, Texas 78761-5999"
And here's what you need to copy, fill out, and send:
"REQUEST FOR PUBLIC CRIMINAL HISTORY DATA
I request a certified notarized copy of the criminal history data available to the public under Texas Government Code, Section 411.135, on the following person:
Name (Last, First, Middle):
Other Names Used: N/A
Sex:
Race:
Date of Birth:
Please mail response to:
[Name and Address Here]"

I have no idea whether or not being in Seoul will make much of a difference in getting this process completed the way I did. Since it's all through the mail, I imagine you can get it done just as well a current Texas resident could, aside from it taking a little bit longer. |
