Hi I live in Los Angeles and just went to get a police background check from the LAPD. They said they only do clearances (at the main building in downtown LA) and I got a certificate that says a 'name search was done' and that I came up clean. However there is a qualification that non-LA police files were not checked, fingerprints were not done and therefore identity was not positively established. It also says that it is to assist with foreign travel requirements and not as an employment prerequisite. My question is simple: Do I need to get a more comprehensive criminal check? I saw somewhere else that the only way to do this is to write to Sacramento and it's a fairly long process... Anyone else from LA or Cali with suggestions?

If this is to get a e-2 visa, the background check must be a statewide check or FBI check. An LAPD background will not be accepted. This should also be in the job related forum, not the travel form.

Getting a statewide check is really a relatively quick and easy process. Just google California and background check. You just have to go somehwere that does LiveScans and fill out an application, pay the fee thats it. You should then receive your background check in the mail a few weeks later. Just be sure to mention on the application that it needs to be apostilled and for them to include a letter with a original signature and stamp. That way you can get it apostilled without getting it notarized first.
