i always wondered...why are the really here?

when i was 20 i graduated, and went and lived in london...had a ball, then sydney, and then came to korea for a nice easy income to stay for a year or two and take it more easily.

the 20-s are great in your own country too....first jobs, new to having some money, best years of your life.

is it true the under 30's that go to korea are just mostly losers who coiuldnt find a job anywhere except burger king (thats a north american thing i think) ? or just could never find a girlfriend.

wehn you get to 30, you enjoy a year or two in an interestign place that expands your mind and pays well much more.

under 30's, you should be gettgin some core experience back home and enjoying your own country (or another even better western country) as much as you can!

i think its just sad to see those under 30's wasting their prime in korea teaching.

dont waste your youth in a place that will mean nothign at all to you in 3-5 years (except for saying hi in korean to your foreign taxi driver or store owner back home)

Sorry but I think its actually the other way around. I would only want to live here in my 20s. Korea is the sort of place where young people have the most fun. I think its obvious why so many of my generation are here: we can work off those loans while living comfortably, not to mention being in Asia is just more exciting for me personally. Besides, I dont expect to interrupt an established career to come teach here when Im in my 30s.

if we are wasting our best years here then you are wasting your worst years here. either way sounds like we are all wasting our time. at least we are in it together.

i'll tell you when i get there, all i know is i have lived in my 20's in the states, china, and korea, and the states are not the best place to be, at least for me. now i know some of you lived in your moms basement until you were 30, got kicked out, and had no choice but to come here and receive more free housing. more power to you.

I generally find that anyone who refers to a certain age as "the best years of your life" or "your prime" is usually a complete loser who managed to somehow have fun for a couple of years, then went back to being a complete loser who has nothing to do but look back on that short period of happiness and get wistful.

I'm having the time of my life over here. And, if you think international experience won't be crucial in this ever globalized world- you are surely mistaken. Even if teaching ESL has no real relevance to your career path and you had an awful time here, only a fool wouldn't be able to spin their experience into something meaningful and attractive to employers.

i was in korea from ages 21-24 and for the most part loved it. i didn't take things too seriously and enjoyed myself in a big way. also i think that it changed my life, by making me see the world differently.
i wouldn't want to be there 10 years from now doing the same things though. i taught english for one year, then worked for korean companies the other two, and all three of those years were a bit lame for my cv in all honesty. i'd say your 20s are your best time to do the korea thing, unless you are making enough money to not care about anything else, or are properly invested in korean society (married, kids, etc).

Really dude? Your a moron!

So many things you have bass ackwards. First, being recent graduates we come because the salary is very competitive to entry level jobs in the states - substantially more taken into consideration the included apartment. Furthermore, I and i'm sure most other young people in or on there way to korea plan to have well paying jobs in their home countries. You think taking a year off while in the middle of a career is a good move? Hell no its about the enjoyment and experience before you have to enter the corporate/business rat race. "getting more core experience?" wth are you talking about? the 20's are the time to teach in korea if you are at all career oriented. (non esl career oriented i guess)

And since when is taking a year in a foreign wasting your time? Variety is the spice of life my man, just because people come to korea to teach does not mean they are not enjoying there time back home. My hometown will always be there, and will still have a blast when I return home in a year.

And personally, i'm leaving a girlfriend to come to korea. Hell i'll probably be married by my thirties and there is no way in hell i'd be going to korea in a year then. I garuntee you I will have more fun strickly on a social level in my 20's then I would have coming in my 30's.

so basically you got everything wrong. its the people that come over in there 30's, who are not career ESLers, that you got to question. idiot.
