Don't get me wrong. I lived in Seoul for two years and loved it, but no matter how hard I try to scrutinize the situation now -- Korea just isn't all that. Sure, the money is good and the chicks are hot, but is it really worth it to be an alien, isolated from your family and culture, indefinitely? Is it worth all the staring and spitting and rotten cabbage, the crowds and pollution, the cultural misunderstandings and alienation? I know what you're saying: that's have the fun of it, the Asian playground, the exoticism, the attention, the easy dates and fast cash, but is it really all that? Sure, I put away a few won out there in ESL-land, had more private lessons than any sane person should've, jetted off to Manila on a wim, had month long holidays in the city of sin, chased the dragon in Phenom Phen, but is teaching English in Korea really all that? |

I don't think it is ALL THAT.
However, is being chained to a desk job in a cubical back home any better? |

People still use that gay phrase??
Somewhere in your post you should have included the equally nauseating saying "24/7" and maybe the occasional "dawg." |

I think he was trying to write something poetic. But his poetic skills aren't, yeah wait for it, all that.
But is there any english teacher here that claims teaching in Korea is the career choice of a life time? It's different. It's a break. It's a struggle. He's trying to tell us the sun comes up every morning. Right. We know. So enjoy that rocket science job you've clearly returned to back in North America and come back when you have something less obvious to comment about. |

Admitting that you did not love Korea/Koreans/and all things Korean here will get you attacked. Let me save some other posters the time-
"Well its like that all over the world"
"Thats not unique to Korea"
Where else could you save that much money for so little work?
Its better then _____ (fill in whatever professional job) back home
"Enjoy your job @ (some menial job in your home country)
If it was so bad then why did you stay for two years?!
Jeez- I am sick to death of people coming on here and stating their opinion and being attacked for it. ESPECIALLY when that opinion is negative toward Korea/Koreans/ and all things Korean. Hey, here a newsflash- You dont have to love, or even like Korea/Koreans/ and all things Korean in order to live/work here! I have never met anyone who likes everything here; hell I never met a Korean who liked everything here. The Koreans I know complain about things being bad here all the time- they are not in a fantasy world where Korea is the bright beacon of hope in a dark and cold universe. They freely criticize the insanity of certain things here quite freely. When I see Korean immigrants in the US I dont get pissed off if they complain, I dont snap Well why did you come here if its so bad? at them. Why? Because they are venting frustration and I know the US is far from perfect. Why is it such a board taboo to admit that this place has faults? Why is it taboo to bring up the hypocrisy we see here, day in and day out?
Thank god for avatars- I just look to the left and screen out the people I cant stand here.
Why cant this forum have an ignore user function? I know I am not the only person who would readily use it. |

Yeah it is. Not an entire career, but an important part of one. |

I don't believe cultural misunderstandings and alienation to be necessary while living in Korea. If you learn the culture, these do not become problems. |

The point is that the laundry list in the original post are things that have been discussed to no end and have been beaten to death on this forum. When you read the same damn thing for the upteenth time, it gets...dull, dry, boring, trite...like chewing on a roll of tinfoil after a root canal.
I'm in no way an apologist nor can I be labelled a whiner. There are things about Korea that piss me off on a daily basis that i've made reference to on this forum but I chose to take these harships with a grain of salt for the sake of my own sanity if nothing else.
And for the record I am a strong proponent in the mindset "If you hate it sooo much, get the hell out and go home." No one is holding a gun to your head. I always have the sneaking suspicion that anyone who whines and cries about Korea would be equally discontent no matter where they were.
Fricken babies need to sack up and take responsibily for their life decisions.
BTW, I don't think that Korea is ...... grrrr "all that".....but i knew that before coming here. I also know that Canada isn't "all that" either, in fact I don't know of too many countries where i'm employable that are.....sigh...."all that."

Actually, open your own business, work at it for about 10yrs, hire a manager who you can trust, and heck you can screw off for a month at a time |

I think owning your own island is "all that" - but since I have no firsthand experience on that, I could be wrong. |
