Back in my gumdo days, my instructor helped me buy a real Japanese sword. He bought it in his name and tried to help me get a license for it, but nobody seemed to know how to get one for a foreigner and he eventually gave up.

Now I'm moving back to America and I want to take it with me, but nobody will let me send it through the mail and the reps at Incheon Airport say I need a license if I'm going to check it. I've been looking into getting a license again, but once again nobody seems to know how to obtain one.

Has anyone brought a sword out of the country before? What did you have to do to get it over?

If no-one here has an answer, maybe try the Lonely Planet Thorntree forums? If you haven't already.

It would seem like a very uncommon situation, so maybe a more frequented travel forum would give you better luck.

possibly try Sword Forum International too.

http://www.swordforum.com/forums/

I know there are people there who have brought swords back to their home country but I am not sure about Korea (there is a sub forum for Asian swords). They are pretty knowledgeable so worth a try I guess.
