Hey guys
So i read something a while back on these forums about the folks at Yongsan hocking used sensors into new camera bodies and it made me quite nervous about dropping a wad of cash there..
Does anyone know where there are reputable and hopefully reasonably priced camera shops in Seoul?
I'm going for a Nikon D90. Naver has it priced at 825,000W so i'm hoping to pay about that much. |

| Go to a Nikon shop in Yongsan and make sure that you buy the camera with a certificate proving it's authenticity. Many places buy in bulk and there is only one certificate for a box of 20 cameras whilst the proper outlets will have a certificate for each item. |

| Why go to Yongsan? I'd go to Namdaemun if I was after a digital camera, the best shops are there. |

Pixdix is the place to go if you want only new gear. Their prices are comparable to the average you'll find on ennuri.
Another option is to visit the Nikon Sales/Repair center at Yongsan (not the iPark part). They have new cameras, but they're not cheap.
If you're looking to bargain, go to Namdaemun, and bring a notebook/minibook with Opanda software with you. That way you can check the shutter count on the camera. If they refuse to let you check that, walk away.
If you're patient, or are heading home for the summer, look at Cameta Camera. You'll get the cheapest deals on the planet, and often the cameras will only have 500-1500 actuations on them. |

Not in my experience, Namdaemun just has camera stores, and there are a couple of stores that treat you decently. You can also easily walk in & out of every store asking what their best price is. Some won't be interested, a couple will do their best. This is exactly what I did when looking for a tripod a while back, and I was finally offered a couple of good deals. Make them write down prices on their business cards, or if they won't write it down (some won't) just ask for their card and write it yourself. Being tested by demanding consumers who know what they want, and know how to get it will not go down well with some Korean shop guys, but what the heck...you'll quickly discover which shops are helpful.
Yongsan can be a bit frustrating (in my experience). I've been there many times, but haven't bought any camera gear despite (other than small things like filters).
The other place to try is Chungmuro, but that's more for film photography. I kind of hate Chungmuro in some ways, as most of the shop owners are unhelpful, but on the other hand there is some interesting (if overpriced) gear there.
To get the best deal, you'll want to shop around as much as is possible, if it was my money I wouldn't limit myself to Yongsan. |

Aren't the shops in Namdaemun the one's ripping people off by putting old sensors in new cameras? Remember the guy on this board who plugged the cameras into his laptop and found the sensors to have had thousands of shots on them? |

I highly doubt that they're swapping sensors or shutter mechanisms, as that's a pretty labor intensive job. What you have to be concerned with are used cameras and lenses being sold as new. Unfortunately, this practice is all too common in Yongsan, Technomart, and Namdaemun. |

My friend used a camera shop in Namdaemun. He went in there to buy a Canon 30D.
The shop sold him a Canon D30 for the price of a 30D. When he went back to get a refund, the shopowner said, "No refund, no exchange". When my friend went back there with a police officer, the shop owner denied ever having sold the camera, and upon closer inspection of the receipt, the are that shows the merchant's information doesn't match the store's.
Bait and switch.
However, I bought my Canon Ixus at Namdaemun camera shop. Probably not the same shop as my friend. I got a decent deal, and had a bunch of extras thrown in like spare battery, LCD cover, cleaning supplies, etc...
I bought a Camera off of Gmarket before, and it was legit. Not a chinese knockoff like I had feared. |
