And North Korea is Quebec.
Regional differences in attitude, economy, geography and culture in Korea remind me of contrasts in my home country of Canada.
Do you notice parallels?
Seoul is the self-absorbed metropolis, Busan the warmer coastal city in the more mountainous region, Gwangju the hip yet poorer regional centre like Winnipeg, Jeju the distinctly different island, and North Korea separated by the DMZ like the language barrier of Quebec.
Gyeongju is like Montreal in its history and attractions, Ulsan like Hamilton or Windsor in its industrial pollution... any more thoughts?
And, of course, Geoje reminds me of Vancouver Island
(an island less than an hour away from the big coastal city on the Pacific, a great tourist destination among nationals rather than internationals, and closest to the wealthy neighbouring country of Japan/U.S.). |

Bloody canadians
We in Australia have something much more similar to Jejudo, Tasmania(except without all the palmtrees). Both are of the south of the country, both are known for their beauty, both use tourism as their drawcard. |

The Sunshine Coast, The Great Ocean Road, I totally relate to those places as having a similar charm.
However, when I travelled that Korean island I thought the high arching coastline with winding roads was reminiscent of Norway: bloody spectacular. And the southern beach is shades of Carmel, California. And even the bridgeway is as fetching as Vancouver's Ironworkers' Memorial.
I have been to many islands in South Korea, yet none has bettered my trip to Namhae. It was a great day. |

Bloody convicts
In the UK we've got something similar too: Jersey. Both are of the south of the country, both are known for their beauty, both use tourism as their drawcard. |
