Hi there! I was wondering, if I have a ticket home (to the US), and I go to get my driver's license back (in Dobong), will they cancel my Korean license, or recollect it? I ask, because I will be back only a few short days after I leave Korea. I need to drive in the US, and would like to continue to drive here in Korea upon my return. Basically, I would just like to know how it is getting your license back from the Koreans. Thanks in advance!  |

1) will they cancel my Korean license,

2) or recollect it?
NO
They just dig it out of the box and return it to you.

And further good news for you (unless this has changed recently), is that when you come back to Korea, you won't have to RE-surrender your US license. |

Then why do you have to surrender it at all in the first place? Simply presenting it should be sufficient. What's to stop someone from coming back and getting it right after surrendering it? |

Lack of a ticket leaving the country sometime in the near future. |

 Are you suggesting I'm wrong here or do you actually think I'm responsible for Korean Drivers' License office policies?
I don't know if it's the answer to your above question, but quite a few other countries require you to surrender the licence you are exchanging for theirs. Korea isn't unique in this regard at all. I'm not 100% on this, but I think there are other countries who will not return your home (or other) country's licence unless you are leaving their shores permanently. If you were going back home on a temporary visit, they'd tell you to get an IDP like anyone else driving outside of the country they're presently residing in.
Hey, I'd agree that it'd make more sense for Korea to ask us to re-surrender our licences on our return back here, or perhaps even to not return the damn thing at all for visits back home and extract money out of us for an IDP instead. But I'm certainly not complaining that they don't!! |

| I only showed my US license and took a written test to get my Korean license. Never took it from me. My Korean license is as valid as long as it's valid for-- it is independent from my visa status. |

| I never gave them my US license. Its my property! They complained but eventually gave in. I paid for Korean license so I didnt get anything free. |

Has anyone gotten a Korean license this year? I've got a US license and have been told that now I need to get it notarised by the US embassy first. DO the Korean DMVs actually require this?
Besides my US license, passport, ARC, photos, and money, is there anything else I need to bring with me?
Also, anyone know if they have study guides available online for the written test? |

You're in Suwon, so you're going to want to go to the Yongin Drivers Test Center.
At that location, no-- you will only need the following:
제1종 자동차운전면허시험 응시표 - Class 1 license driver's test application
Medical check (done downstairs)
Passport
IF you don't want to take the driver's test, bring your foreign license as well. |

Either you're just new to Korea and honestly don't know the BS that goes on here (one office says A, one office says B, one office says A and B are wrong) or you're somehow doing it differently then me.
I admit I got my license first 5 years ago, and only recently visited there due to a Class 2 and Motorcycle upgrade, but I have not heard anything about needing a notarized copy of squat.
To be honest though, Americans get special treatment at most government offices (including the police and immigration) so you're probably fine if you're from the states, which I quite possibly ignorantly assume you are. |

New to Korea, but know about the BS. Thing is, this is Korea. Things change a lot. A couple of months ago I thought Americans needed notarised copies. http://seoul.usembassy.gov/drive.html
But if you got your license 5 years ago, things were different. Maybe you are right, outside of Seoul we don't need notarised copies, but the America embassy says otherwise . I hope they're wrong  |
