Tomorrow (Feb. 11) is the 31st anniversary of the Revolution and is expected to be a day of major anti-government protests.
"At the same time, the regime has promised to organize its own counterdemonstrations, busing in supporters from distant rural villages to take on the protesters. It will be the first time that pro- and anti-government demonstrations will be going head-to-head since last summer. With neither side backing down, there is every reason to expect a violent clash. Whether that could augur a civil war in the country remains to be seen."

Other reports say the gov't has removed the garbage cans from the streets and has cut off internet service to 1/3 of the country. Clearly, the gov't is gearing up for a big day. Someone says 3,000,000 people are expected to turn out, but no one knows which side is playing that particular card in the expectations game.
One poster said here the other day that the Iranian protests are just evidence of hotheads and have no meaning. I don't agree. Whether it will all end up in regime change, I don't pretend to know, but this Green Movement is what we have been waiting for for 31 years. It would be a major, major victory against fundamentalism if Iran changes. |
