I am considering this day trip to Railay from Phuket.

According to what I have read, it takes roughly 3 hours to Krabi by bus, then 40 more minutes by boat to Railay beach.

My question is, is it worth it? I saw some pics, and it's a wonderful beach, but it's a long trip just to see something beautiful. Anyone think it's worth it?

Hi - I think you said Railay. That should be a beach near Ao Nang. I think you can get scooters in Krabi and drive yourself.

I did say Railay. We are going to Phuket. I was asking if it is worth the almost 4 hours trip to spend a little time in Railay.

Scooters are out of the question. We have a 2 year old daughter.

Yea, Railay is beautiful as is Krabi. I don't think Phuket has the Karsts, the Karsts are well worth seeing. There is national park outside of Krabi thats pretty close to a jungle experience. I recommend being there at dusk when the animals come out and sing. Little pickup truck taxis ride all day so you have some options. I think your trip would make a busy day.

Thats odd, we did the opposite. You decided it was best to go to Phuket and and then wondered about a side trip to Railay. I decided to go to Railay and wondered about a side trip to Phuket.

Probably too far for a day visit, esp w/ a kid. You're better off going on a boat ride day trip rather than being stuck on a minibus tuktuk for that time. It may be worth it as a boat ride, but still too rushed I think for 1 day.

Plenty to see/do around Phuket-- Always go to PhaNga, about 1 hour from the airport, 2 something from town/beach. Ko Yao island is close and beautiful, very easy to get to from town/east side.

Hello again Bohol

Definitely too rushed for a day trip, especially with a little one.

As I remember, there are three beaches -- West Hat Rai Leh (upscale & expensive); East Hat Rai Leh (cheap but not as nice); Ton Sai (good beach, mid-priced). I stayed at Ton Sai. Prices will be a little higher than Phuket.

The sunsets are gorgeous. Well worth staying for a day or two. The only downside is that you need to take a boat between Ton Sai and the other beaches.

A day trip you might make from Rai Leh is Ko Phi Phi, a fun little island a little south of Krabi. No cars! People push little carts and say "beep, beep" as they pass.

Don't be so quick about that. The Thais seemed to fit entire families and their furniture and a live chicken on their scooters and its not monsoon season so its likely you won't get rained on.

I actually have a regard for the safety of my family. No scooters for us.

Thanks to all who have replied. I have done a little research, and the best route seems to be trying to get directly into Ao Nang, not Krabi town. Krabi town seems a bit out of the way and I doubt there's anything there that I can't see/get in Phuket.

If we go, we'll stay the night in the Ao Nang area, or maybe in Rai Leh.
